Book Description

March 1993 9 and upJunior Black Americans of Achievement
Phyllis Wheatley was born in West Africa, kidnapped by slave traders and brought to Boston in 1761 to live with a wealthy merchant family, the Wheatleys, as a domestic servant. With the help of the Wheatleys, she had a book of poetry published in London, the second woman in America to accomplish such a feat.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8--S caled-down versions of titles in the ``American Women of Achievement'' series. It is difficult to believe that two different authors wrote the biographies on Sandra Day O'Connor since many sentences in Macht's book duplicate those in Peter Huber's title (Chelsea, 1990). Some of the same black-and-white photos appear in both books, although there are far more in older one. Both biographies will be useful additions to most collections, but those owning the earlier books will not need this duplication of facts and illustrations. --Blair Christolon, Prince William Library, Manassas, VA

If your looking for a book with some sadness, some love, and some great poetry, you'll love this book. It also contains some history, which is kinda cool, because while I was reading this book, I was learning about great events in the worlds past without even realizing it! I'm going into my freshmen year of college now, and I hate to read educational things but this book, brought me the inspiration to write my own poetry, and it taught me a lot as well, which is always a plus in a book.
