5.0 out of 5 stars The sound of Philadelphia January 9, 2010
Format:Audio CD
If you don't know Swana, you are missing one of the finest most creative post-bop trumpet players of this generation. The whole CD also SOUNDS like Swana's home town because the cats in the band are all cheese steak-eating, Eagles-cheering locals. Swinging, gritty hard bop from the town that helped invent it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful October 29, 2013

I can only echo what the other reviewer said. I discovered Swana late--apparently an injury has kept him from playing trumpet--and just couldn't believe my ears. Why isn't (wasn't) this guy better known? I guess modesty and the lack of a publicist hurt him, but very few players (John McNeill would be another) leave you with the feeling they could keep up with Tommie Harrell and not miss a beat. This guy had everything: chops, sound, ideas, a feel for the horn, all coming out of Freddie Hubbard, to be sure, but expressed in a different way. In any event, I highly recommend this recording to any aspiring postbopper. Swana was--is?--one of the best. Big name or no.
