Book Description

October 1991 0872201244 978-0872201248 4
This major version -- the first since 1982 -- features an extensive change in content, as well as a more capacious page and wider margins. While maintaining scrupulous examination of positions, arguments, and objections, every chapter has been reworked to improve its organisation, to make it more accessible and engaging to the student, and to reflect recent discussions. Chapter One introduces the student to the nature of philosophy as a discipline and to the methods of philosophical argument. Subsequent chapters treat the same fundamental topics as in earlier editions: knowledge and scepticism, freedom and determinism, the mind-body problem, the rationality of belief in God, and the problem of choosing an ethical standard. New exercises have been added throughout.

This review is from: Philosophical Problems and Arguments: An Introduction (Paperback)
This book has been used as the text for my introductory philosophy class. It does an wonderful job of conveying basic philosophical arguments to the reader. Overall, it is a great book that discusses a few basic philosophical issues with clarity and precision.

5.0 out of 5 stars A challenging, rewarding, introduction to Western Philosophy., November 24, 2010
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Philosophical Problems and Arguments: An Introduction, is not for "Dummies." This text, now in 4th Edition, presents six parts: What is Philosophy, What is Knowledge, What is Personal Liberty, What is a Person, What is God, What is Ethics.

Philosophy is, the continual examination of life, thoughts, choices.

Which, only too obviously, we, people, can get right, or get wrong.

There are a number of other introductory Philosophy texts offered through Amazon, and I suggest reading two or more such works. The book I commend here is, in my opinion, superb.
