Hutcheson (1694-1746) introduced the civic humanist tradition into higher education and, in recent years, has been accepted as the founder of modern aesthetics. Among the students he trained in the Whig philosophy of personal liberty and government restraint was Adam Smith; his influence extended over the Enlightenment, and especially David Hume. This compilation of his views demonstrates Hutcheson's progressivism on social justice, representative government, colonial autonomy, and the rejection of slavery.

Hutcheson's profound influence on Jefferson and the American Constitution is only beginning to be rediscovered. Unfortunately, this collection uses modern typographic conventions, and much of his meaning is lost when the original, highly-structured typography is sacrificed. You'd do better to find a library with an original edition or facsimile.
