Editorial Reviews

Review

"For more than a decade, this is the only introductory text that I have used. I would not have remained faithful to it if I didn't believe it to be an excellent collection of problems and responses. It's the best available text for the type of introductory course that I want to offer our beginning students."--H. Scott Hestevold, The University of Alabama

Format: Paperback
The first edition of "Philosophy: The Quest for Truth" was compiled by Louis Pojman in the late 1980s. Now in its eighth edition, it remains one of the better anthologies for college-level introduction to philosophy courses.

This anthology is divided into the following major sections: What is philosophy? Philosophy of religion. Knowledge. Philosophy of mind. Freedom of the will and determinism. Ethics. Political philosophy. What is the meaning of life? Contemporary moral problems. (The contemporary moral problems include: Is abortion morally permissible? Is the death penalty morally permissible? Do animals have rights? Do we have obligations to the poor and hungry?)

This anthology contains a nice blend of classical and contemporary writings on the various issues. On the whole the selections are balanced between the different positions taken by philosophers on these issues as well. A couple helpful extras not often seen in introductory philosophy texts are a timeline at the beginning of the book and an appendix on how to read and write philosophy papers.

"Philosophy: The Quest for Truth," now in its eighth edition, remains one of the better anthologies appropriate to introductory philosophy courses. Lewis Vaughn continues the the great tradition started by the late Louis Pojman in the late 1980s.

The book is divided into the following major sections: What is philosophy? (This first section also includes a brief but adequate discussion of the basic principles of logic.) Philosophy of religion. Knowledge. Philosophy of mind. Freedom of the will and determinism. Ethics. Political philosophy. What is the meaning of life? Contemporary moral problems. (The last of these sections includes the following questions: Is abortion morally permissible? Is the death penalty morally permissible? Do animals have rights? Do we have obligations to the poor and hungry?)

The selections represent a nice blend of classical and contemporary writings on the various issues. On the whole the selections are balanced between the different positions taken by philosophers on these issues as well. Whatever biases the editors may have is not apparent from the selections they have chosen to anthologize.

A couple helpful extras not often seen in introductory philosophy texts are a timeline at the beginning of the book and an appendix on how to read and write philosophy papers.

This book is not the easiest read. It seems hard for them to focus or should I say stay on topic? seems like the delve into each little tiny detail WAY too much. Its almost as if the writer gets off on tangents. Made it hard to focus on his material, hard to stay interested. This book made me wish I had not taken the class after all.

The book was alright! Some of the stories were difficult to follow at times. Then again this is simply not an easy subject!

Like the seller stated the book did have some ware, and some water damage but it had a little more then I was expecting. Works fine for the class I am taking though.

I'd like to start off saying I am a college student. This is the first time I've rented a textbook from Amazon. I usually trust Ch*gg or other major textbook rental sites.

Things I LOVED about my experience with this renter:

The book was BRAND-NEW I can truly appreciate that the book was in QUALITY condition. I was pleasantly surprised to see that even though I plan on renting this book, I can still receive it in mint condition (which I plan on keeping it in for the next guy/gal).

It was available to me well before my class date, I ordered in a timely fashion and it was delivered to me on a timely fashion.

Needless to say I really can appreciate how business was handled. I would not hesitate to continue any transactions with this Amazon renter.

Thank you. 5 stars!
