Sparkling set of standards from elusive piano wiz,

This review is from: Phineas Rainbow (Audio CD)
In October 1956, the elusive piano wizard recorded a sparkling set of standards and two of his originals, accompanied by his brother Calvin on guitar, George Joyner on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. Possessed of phenomenal technique, Phineas was also capable of playing with restraint and sensitivity. This is demonstrated in his solo take on "Stairway to the Stars", in which he allows the tune to gradually climb to a transcendent conclusion without overwhelming the listener with gratuitous volleys of notes. Still, there's plenty of evidence here that he's in the same league as Oscar Peterson when it comes to sheer virtuosity.

This review is from: Phineas Rainbow (Audio CD)
Anything by Phineas Newborn is worth hearing. This CD is among his best. Not to be missed is his version of Clifford Brown's Lands End, for which he wrote an entirely different bridge. Phineas wrote a few beautiful songs with women's names for titles: Diane, Pamela... On this CD, there's Clarisse. Among all the great jazz piano players, this man had THE most fabulous touch.
