How to Start a Fire
Anna, Kate and Georgiana have been bosom buddies since their salad days at University of California at Santa Cruz: This novel follows the three adventurous women into middle age. Read about the author, Lisa Lutz

Book Description

Small town volunteer firefighter Cynthia "Phoebe" Hodges meets Prince Charming, disguised as ex-Marine captain Andrea (Andy) Agnielli, at the annual firemen's carnival, falls in love, gets married, and lives happily ever after.

Andy is a hero who is dealing with the consequences of his heroism: the pain of his own injuries, his sense of responsibility for the deaths of two of his men and the severe wounds of two others. Phoebe is tough and funny, hard-boiled and sentimental, yet she is a young women dealing with her own problems: a broken home, a self-centered mother, never enough money and never enough time to do all the things she wants to do.

"Phoebe Clayton" is the story of their courtship, marriage, and their efforts to revive a defunct furniture company. Set in the space of 18 months, it follows the business from Andy's initial tentative idea, through incorporation, to making a profit, while chronicling the life and times of a pair of newlyweds and their friends. It is a combination love story, war story, firehouse story, and business chronicle, as well as an affectionate look at life in a small town.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Truly Wonderful Read September 8, 2013

This is one if those rare undiscovered gems that will delight you no end. The writer has a confident hand, a wonderful voice, and a marvelous eye for detail. He has written something that is timely, giving us insight into the men who have fought our most recent wars. But he does this with restraint, in the way that the characters themselves would want. At the same time he writes a modern, sweet love story between a small town firefighter and her savvy entrepreneur. I picked this up on a whim and it quickly drove the three other things i was reading to the back of the line. This is marvelous stuff. Read it, you won't be disappointed.

I just finished rereading it for the second time (Yes, that makes three reads, total. I'm a proud pedant.) and decided to actually write a small review for those considering whether to make the investment. Yes, there is a love story, and furniture, and little bits of history and literature and how to run a better business and witty conversation and really dreadful jokes... and seriously imperfect parents and why the EU won't work... Somehow the author lets it all organically fit into a story of two people happily loving each other and working hard together because it's just worth doing.

A little story reminiscent of the best of Heinlein without any science fiction whatsoever, being firmly rooted in modern America. I look forward to future volumes from Mr. Pruitt.
