Book Description

Follows a kinkajou from her home in a tropical forest to her new life as a pet in an American household and describes the characteristics and behavior of these animals in general.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8 Phoebe, a kinkajou (or honey bear), was adopted by the author's family after being used as a research subject in studies at Harvard University. MacClintock has written a photo essay similar to A Raccoon's First Year (Scribners, 1982), but far more thorough in content. Clearly written, exquisitely detailed paragraphs characterizing the kinkajou's habits (eating, use of feet and tail, nighttime activity, etc.) acquaint readers with this curious animal's life style. Phoebe's adaptation to her new home is contrasted with observations of her life in her natural habitat, the tropical forest of the Isthmus of Panama. This fascinating book is not a simple introductory photo essay on an unusual animal but a serious study of the subject. Young's many exceptional photos of Phoebe, however, make the book accessible for use with young children. Words that are defined in the glossary are italicized when they first appear in the text. A fascinating choice for upper elementary children reporting on mammals. Susan Scheps, Bertram Woods Library, Shaker Heights, Ohio
