Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-7 When 11-year-old Phoebe returns from camp, she expects her whole family to be there to welcome her home. However, her family and friends seem preoccupied with other concerns. Her mother has taken a job, and her sisters are wrapped up in their own lives. Worst of all, Fee's friends have become immersed in make-up, clothes, and boys. Seeking refuge, Fee becomes a library helper, only to be plunged into a book-banning dispute. Explaining the negative effect of censorship on young readers is the most important thing this book does. Unfortunately, plot unity is threatened by superficial examination of too many characters' concerns. Perhaps this is to allow Phoebe to be a springboard for the following books in the series, but it serves this book poorly. Dialogue is unrealistic and the denouement too pat. Consider for purchase for the paperback rack only because of the interest that the censorship issue might have to preteens. Cindy Darling Codell, Belmont Junior High Schol, Winchester, Ky.

2.0 out of 5 stars Pheobe is Alright I suppose, October 15, 2002
This review is from: Phoebe: A Novel (Sisters Series, Book 1) (Hardcover)
Pheobe is the serious one of the four sisters in Marilyn Kayes SISTERS series. Her latest cause is trying to stop a young-adult book series with sexual references from being banned.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book, August 22, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Phoebe: A Novel (Sisters Series, Book 1) (Hardcover)
First-off, let me say that I was not expecting much from this book. Mostly, I just wanted to see Lyidia's lectures on current events since I'm into current events. But I really got into it. This book is about everything changing for Phoebe-her mom, her living room, and most of all, her friends. Everyone wants to grow up and stuff except for her. But the when someone wants to take some very popular books off the shelf, Phoebe takes a stand. In the end, she kind of makes up with her friends. I really liked this book. I was rooting for Phoebe (even though I knew it would make no difference!) and I really enjoyed this book. Maybe not quite everyone would enjoy reading this book, but I think many will.
