This is a sweet and tender family story about a major accomplishment in Phoebe's young life; achieved on her birthday, no less. Richly illustrated in the tradition of well-told children's tales, the beautiful artwork allows readers - young or old - to relate to their own special times in life. Astonishingly, the author also includes the knitting and quilting patterns of her creative designs so readers can make enduring reminders of Phoebe's special Birthday for their own loved ones.

I love this whole series. My favorite picture is the one of the yarn store, but the whole book is delightful.

What I love about this book is that it is suited to a range of ages. In my family, we have an infant girl, a 6-year old girl, and 9-year old girl. The setting of the beach is special to our family, and never grows old (even for a pre-teen) and there is a pattern in the back of the book perfect for each of my girls. The colorful, fanciful beach and mermaid illustrations really feel inviting to the imagination and the story celebrates a milestone birthday in such a wonderful way.
