Book Description

5 and up
In a tale by the author of Gargoyles' Christmas, Phoebe comes to appreciate her father, even though, as a famous musician, he is rarely at home, when she realizes that they are a lot alike.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

As in this pair's Gargoyles' Christmas, Taylor's spunky illustrations gamely but vainly try to salvage a mediocre text. One problem is the book's dual focus. First, it strives a little too obviously to teach a lesson that is at best questionable?Phoebe must learn to accept her musician father's workaholism. Second, the story turns on a running gag: a series of hamhanded hints climaxes in visual confirmation that Phoebe's father is, literally, a dinosaur. In the slight plot, Phoebe and her mother run errands before their family concert performance and discuss the absent father. Over the course of the day, Phoebe realizes how special he is. Taylor's chalk pastels and acrylics are rakishly cartoonish, full of cleverly cloaked visual clues and zany, fun-house perspectives. Attentive observers may enjoy the revelation on the final spread: a little dino tail pokes out from under Phoebe's skirt, too. All the kooky details, unfortunately, don't add up to a solid story. Ages 3-8.

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2-Phoebe and her family are musicians. In fact, Phoebe's father is known as a giant in the music world-so much so that Phoebe is more than a little envious of the time he spends practicing his cello instead of being with her and her mother. On a Saturday morning before a big concert, Phoebe and Mrs. Saurus run errands, starting at the laundromat and ending up at the library. The child comes to realize that Eddie Saurus gave up quite a bit of fame to play with his family instead of making the world-famous records he used to make. This changes her whole perspective on how she sees her colossal father. Only through the pictures at the end do readers learn that he is, indeed, a dinosaur, although hindsight shows that a few clues were there all along. The illustrations are done in chalk pastels and acrylics. Children will find lots to observe in the brightly colored pictures. The artwork has a nice contrast with shadows and reflections that give the illustrations a luminous quality. The characters are drawn with such expression that they come to life on the page. This book will give anyone a chuckle, but it also has an important message attached to it: people are more than they appear at first glance.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Illustrations!, February 18, 2000
This review is from: Phoebe's Fabulous Father (Library Binding)
This a wonderfully illustrated book! My daughter, who is two, loves to just look at the pictures! This is a book I would recommend to six and up. It is a little lengthy for the younger set to follow. The story is definitely imaginative!
