Gr. 5^-7. The second episode in the Petticoat Party series picks up the story of 12-year-old Phoebe Brown and her companions on the primarily female wagon train bound for Oregon in 1846. Left with only four men, all of whom are injured during a buffalo hunt, the women must learn to shoot in order to survive the rest of the 1,400 mile journey. After Phoebe, who's far from an expert shot, unthinkingly brags about the ladies' shooting skills to an Indian, the women are promptly challenged to a shooting match--and win. Readers looking for realism won't find much here: this is 99 percent entertainment, with a trace of history and geography thrown in. And, unfortunately, Karr bombards readers with a slew of difficult words--
sartorial,
fruition,
precipitously. Still, Phoebe is a likable, spunky heroine who will attract a loyal following.
