A Re-Issue of a Classic!

George Rawlinson's classic account of the Phoenicians, one of the most important and compelling of ancient civilizations--and one of the least familiar to the general public--is here reissued in its first paperback edition. Topics covered include "Early Phoenician Enterprise", "Rise of Tyre to the First Rank Among the Cities", "Phoenicia's Contest With Assyria, and Her Position as Assyria's Tributary", "Phoenicia's Recovery of Independence", "Phoenician Manufactures and Works of Art" and "Phoenician Language, Writing and Literature". This seminal work has provided the basis for much modern scholarship on the history and archaeology of the Levant.

1.0 out of 5 stars Its day has passed, July 15, 2008
This review is from: Phoenicia: History of a Civilization (Paperback)
This book by Rawlinson was probably very good in its day, but unfortunately it was written in 1889. The current edition is a reprint. Meanwhile, the major archaeological work upon which our current understanding of the Phoenicians is based was performed in the 20th century, by Pritchard, Bikai and others. As a result, the work by Rawlinson is hopelessly out of date and contains many 'facts' which have since been disproven. Other, more recent, books are much more accurate and complete.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb!, June 23, 2006
This review is from: Phoenicia: History of a Civilization (Paperback)
A splendid chronology of the Phoenician people, who invented - among other things - the trireme, longitudinal navigation and teabagging.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very well written, June 27, 2006
By
This review is from: Phoenicia: History of a Civilization (Paperback)
The Phoenicians are so under rated by many teachers, but then again most of the teachers never studied Phoencian history or culture. The Phoenicians were well advanced in the art of seafaring and trading. Which led to trading and helping as well as colonising with many nations that surrounded them as well with those nations that were outside, and boarderd along the Atlantic Ocean. They were so good at what they did that they didn't even leave maps of their voyges. Also they were well known partners with the Hebrews and thus shared their secrets with them. Mr. Rawlinson brings a very good well researched view of these mysterious people who only few strong nations got to even know during their exsitance. This is a good book to start with and aslo I recommend the Old Testament for further reserch as well.
