skip the washing machine method,

First of all these prices are insane.. go to your local grocery store or craft store for 2.99 a box. Second, make sure your fabric is cotton! If it is a blend or completely synthetic this will not work - there are synthetic fabric dyes just google it. I use Rit dyes to color both fabrics and other natural fibers for my business. I have tried other 'professional' dyes that required mixing in other chemicals and constant attention. They were all a waste of time and money. I always come back to Rit to fix the mess left by other products. Perhaps others have left their own suggestions but what I have found with Rit is that you should use a stock pot or plastic tub with hot water to open up the fibers in the fabric so they grab the dye. If you are going to be using more than a gallon of water, add a second pack for good measure (when you buy it at normal prices this isn't out of the question). Add the suggested amount of salt no matter what (non iodized table salt seems to work best but I don't know why) - and add vinegar if it seems to be stubborn because it helps set the dye (like dying an easter egg). Finally with deeper colors like black and red it might take hours to get the shade you want which is one reason why the washing machine method does not work (the other reason being the mess it leaves in your machine! No need for the mess when you can just empty a tub into the STAINLESS STEEL sink when you're done with no drama). If your fabric has only turned a shade of gray/purple/blue when you check it, then you may need to let it soak over night; making sure to stir it to keep it even especially if its not all submerged. Its better to give it extra time than to waste yours by giving up after an hour/wash cycle, AND lose your garment in the process. I rinse it with cold water and wash it normally. I have successfully refreshed all of my black cotton clothes using this dye and some patience.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought a black jacket at Singapore about two years ago and due to wear and tear of daily usage, the black became gray with dirty white spots. As I have experience in dyeing, I searched for black dye until I found this Rit Dye Black Powder and, WOW I have a Black Beauty.

I used the black dye and then fixative according to instructions and it worked perfectly. The dyed clothes do not bleed in the laundry.
