The Phoenix Boys Choir is a group of 40 or so boys aged 7-14, formed in 1948 and continuing to provide excellent performances to this day. Under the artistic direction of Georg Stangelberger, formerly of the world-famous Vienna Boys Choir, it performs at a consistently high level, winning a Grammy in 2001 for Best Choral Performance for its part in the recording of Penderecki's "Credo" with the Bach Festival Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Helmut Rilling.

Here the boys, along with the associated Men's Choir and a few fine accompanying instrumentalists, present a program of patriotic and traditional American songs. Altogether there are 15 songs which make up an excellent program of familiar music, well arranged, performed, and recorded. The disk is on the Summit label (No. DCD 353, digitally recorded (DDD) in stereo) and contains 41 minutes, 40 seconds of music in total. Appreciators of this type of music should greatly enjoy this fine CD, which I recommend with pleasure.

Although a list of contents, with listening samples, is provided here, I will offer brief notes providing further information on each track:

1 - America the Beautiful - Sung by the Boys Choir a capella (unaccompanied) in harmony, a fine performance of this good arrangement by Stangelberger.
2 - This is My Country - The Boys sing a capella in unison, then in harmony--a good peformance.
3 - God Bless America - The Boys sing in unison, with piano, trumpet, and percussion accompaniment.
4 - Alexander's Ragtime Band - The Boys sing in unison, then in harmony, with piano and percussion.
5 - Working on the Railroad - The Men's Choir sings with only percussion accompanying this peppy, rhythmic arrangement.
