5.0 out of 5 stars Loved Phoenix Child March 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
It's book review time again; this time I will tell you about Phoenix Child by Alica McKenna Johnson. This is your classic going through the changes teenage story with a couple of delightful twists. The book carries us along with the heroine as she works her way through the usual teenage changes plus a whole lot more.
On a more serious note, Alica gives us a peek into the world faced by far too many children, the world of the "System". This peek might make a few folks slightly uncomfortable, and if it does, that's a good thing.
Don't run away now, because this book is filled with magic, adventure, and mythical creatures. Alica's style is relaxed and easy to read, almost like she's sitting right beside you, telling you the story. I read half in one sitting and wanted to finish it, but time did not allow. I did finish it the next day. I am truly hoping there will be a second book because I love these characters.
Well done Alica, five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gimme More!! March 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I would say that this series has the potential to be better than Harry Potter, and I am a JK Rowling fan. I say series because it has to be. The author only gives any real gritty background on one of the main characters, but gives us enough of a taste of the other main characters that she has opened herself up, not only for sequels (which MUST comme) but for numerous prequels. If she is anything like some writers that I know, these characters are wandering around in her head demanding that their stories be told. Sapphire's story was the lynchpin and had to be told first, but oh what an array of stories are possible from here!

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful read February 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
this is a great first book. i really enjoyed the first person narrative and the fact that the main character was a teen gave some fun/funny sort of smart-alecky mind talk. the story is about a girl, who her 14th birthday develops strange new powers and has interesting appearance changes. none of this would probably have been a problem had she lived at home with her parents, but she was a group home kid, so she had no idea about her family history. i really like the chapter quotes that tied in with the journal entries that the girl's mom left her. it flowed really nicely with the lesson the main character is learning in each chapter. there were parts i laughed at, a couple that made me tear up and one character that i hated with a fiery passion and although the main character has forgiven him, i am still holding a grudge. sadly i hear it will be a bit before book two.. sadness.
