5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, July 17, 2007
This review is from: Phoenix (Audio CD)
I purchased this CD in D.C. after hearing Marcus do a live set at Barnes & Nobles. It is wonderful and a must for Jazz lovers. It combines smooth mellow tunes and upbeat notes that make you want to tap your feet as the great vibes move through your body. He works wonders on those keys. His band is equally talented and I must say it was money well spent!

Waiting for a show in Hampton Va.

Angela

4.0 out of 5 stars An exciting voyage into the urban groove., August 6, 2007
This review is from: Phoenix (Audio CD)
Strong Smooth Jazz delivered by this highly talented keyboardist/pianist will appeal to lovers of Bobby Lyle's, Bob Baldwin's or Roger Smith's music.
One of the standout tracks is the riff laden "Love" which features vocalist Frank McComb in a Stevie Wonder-like song.
On the instrumental side, taste the quality of the groove on " Road to Los Suenos", on which Stanley Cooper adds his soulful guitar.
On the radio friendly and highly melodic "Table for 2" Marcus is joined by the smooth sax operator Phillip Martin.
Other highlights are "The Journey" and "Make It Happen".
All in all, the album is a mix of funky grooves, old time jazz, and a smoky piano bar with an underground beat, which has a top quality.
It is a varied set that will have broad appeal.

Were it not for marketing strategies to capture a wider audience artists like MJ would be a household name. Jazz music nature is chameleon which explains why marketing jazz through popular genre is so necessary. These artists gotta eat. But truly, at the end of the day this guy has chops and sticks. I present his music on my radio program because I understand my obligation to preserve the music branch with the hope the root will be discovered.
Kudos to Mr. Johnson for his courage and determination.
He isn[t rising from the ashes as the title of his latest material suggests, but his artistry will give rise to your soul. yugenfardan@msn.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Big Marcus Johnson fan! I love this CD!, December 5, 2007
This review is from: Phoenix (Audio CD)
I love all of MJP's music! Always soothing on a long commute home or when chillin' at the crib! If you never seen Marcus Johnson Project perform than you are trully missing a master at work! He's plays those ivory's like he was born on them. He performs all over DC. Try going to see him at Blues Alley or 21st Ammendment! LOVED IT!!!

I first discovered Marcus Johnson via EMusic and after hearing just ONE project am hellbent on keeping close tabs on this very exciting keyboardist. He has obviously been influenced by the likes of Joe Sample, Rodney Franklin, Dave Grusin, as well as Alex Bugnon but has carved out a beautifully unique style of his own showcasing a smooth funky, sophositicated jazz CD that you will thoroughly enjoy. I have thus far heard his first and most recent outings and to my delight discovered Amazon has two more of his projects which I am promptly planning to buy upon finishing this review!!

Tight, inventinve piano work - excellent accompanying musicians - urban smooth jazz at its best!!!

I hiiiiiiiiiiighly recommend!

Marcus Johnson does it again! It's got that smooth jazz vibe and that DC "neck factor". If you thought his previous chart toppers were a fluke, think again! It's wonderful, soulful, jazzy, genius, and simply beautiful! A must have for any smooth jazz collection. I highly recommend it for both sitting around the fireplace sipping on a glass of red wine (which I did) or while on the road jamming in your Benz (which I also did). A home run MJ! Keep 'em comin'!
