Phoenix Sun Sails SSL185SKS Square 18.5' Per Side Home Desert Sand Color Sun Sail
Each of our shade sails comes in two varieties: Home and Professional. The home sails have a lighter weight material and use galvanized 6mm hardware. These sails are lighter and easier to install and are available at a more economical price point. The professional sails use a heavier material and 8mm Stainless Steel hardware. If your area of intended use is subject to strong winds or significant precipitation, you may want to consider the professional option.
Phoenix Shade Sails are a great addition to your home, office, or wherever you could use a shade zone. Phoenix Shade Sails provide UV protection from the sun, a cool place for children to play, or an outdoor shaded area for entertaining guests. Set up in a permanent installation or use for portable shade.
All Phoenix Sun Sails come as complete kits including all necessary mounting hardware. The 18.5' square sail kit includes the 18.5' per side square sail, 2 turnbuckles, 2 carabiners, 4 pad eyes, 4 9' lengths of rope, and 16 wood screws. The sail has 4 D Rings, one sewn into each corner, which resist twisting or movement. All mounting hardware and D Rings are made from 6mm Zink coated steel.
The sail itself is constructed from a heavy duty 180g/m2 polyethylene weave material which resists mold and mildew and is easy to clean with simple soap and water. Unlike cloth or canvas materials, the polyethylene weave does not absorb water or humidity. This water resistance, together with built in UV protection, ensures Phoenix sun sails stand up to years of outdoor exposure.

We had a 19'x24' concrete patio we wanted to cover. A metal pergola from the big box stores were not nearly large enough, and a traditional custom wood cover was coming out to be around 5k installed. Too expensive, plus the yearly maintainace on a wood pergola was going to be a monster.
We opted for the Phoenix 18.5 Sun Sail w/ the Professional Kit.
I did the research on mounting the sail. Wood supports bend and rot. Was definetly not mounting the supports to my house. We live in Houston and the thunderstorms are severe. Had a metal driveway gate and burgular bar company here in Houston (J.R. Martinez) build us a custom structure made of four 5" square steel support columns supported by 2" steel box beams around the top. There is an additional 2" upright supports on the east and west side of the structure. The supports were 9.5 feet long 1/4" thick and sunk two feet into the ground, then concreted. Made a steel and concrete cage, if you will, that is 21'x 21' square. This resulted in a net height of 7.5 feet. Ornamental caps were welded on the tops or the main four supports, then the whole thing got two coats of gloss black Rustoleum to protect it from the weather.

The professional kit comes with all stainless hardware. I used the four mounts and screwed them to the structure. The turnbuckles are very nice. The rope and mountain climber rings I pitched and used chain and eight screw lock chain links (also stainless) This additional chain and hardware cost me another $50.00, but were a lot stronger. (The kit is still worth the money as the mounts and turnbuckes are worth about a hundred bucks if you were to try and purchase them seperately.)
Once the mounts were attached to the structure, it took me about an hour to hang and tension the sail. This is where people make their mistakes. You have to try and get it hung as squarely as possible. Make sure the turnbuckles are on one side and the links are on the other. This way you can adjust the tension on all four corners evenly. As I would tension the sail it would stretch. This is normal. Let it sit, loosen the turnbuckles and shorten the chains on all four corners, then tighten the turnbuckles again. I had to do this process about three times to get the sail stretched. Now it is nice and tight, with no wrinkles.
The sail lets a lot of light through. Also, heat does not stay trapped under it, so you stay cool. During the rain it will sag a bit when wet, but not bad. Water does not get trapped on it. Just kind of flows through it. When it dries it tightens back up. In thunderstorms it moves a lot. I have seen it go up and down as much as three feet total, but has never blown off or torn. The sail is made of good quality materials is fairly flexable. Reinforce the hardware and you should be good to go.!!
Now that this review is done, I am heading to my patio to enjoy a cup of coffee with my beautiful wife... Cheers!!
