About the Author

Regarded by many as the "God of Manga" Osamu Tezuka was born in 1928 in Toyonoka, in Osaka, Japan. A prolific author and artist, Tezuka is generally regarded as the single figure responsible for developing Japan's massive manga and anime industries. His cinematic art style and novelistic narratives have made his work as universally accessible and relevant now as when first published in Japan. A list of his well-known and universally loved work includes the classic JUNGLE EMPEROR LEO (also known as Kimba the White Lion), BLACK JACK, ADOLF, MIGHTY ATOM (known as ASTRO BOY in the U.S.) and METROPOLIS (recently made into a hit anime film). Tezuka continued creating comics until his death in 1989.

More About the Author

Osamu Tezuka (1928-89) is the godfather of Japanese manga comics. He originally intended to become a doctor and earned his degree before turning to what was then a medium for children. His many early masterpieces include the series known in the U.S. as Astro Boy. With his sweeping vision, deftly interwined plots, feel for the workings of power, and indefatigable commitment to human dignity, Tezuka elevated manga to an art form. The later Tezuka, who authored Buddha, often had in mind the mature readership that manga gained in the sixties and that had only grown ever since. The Kurosawa of Japanese pop culture, Osamu Tezuka is a twentieth century classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the strangest of the Phoenix books, December 15, 2008
This review is from: Phoenix, Vol. 6 (Phoenix (Viz)) (Paperback)
I felt the need to offset the ridiculous one-star review. Make no mistake, though, this volume deserves its five stars all the way through. Possibly the strangest and most thought-provoking of the Phoenix books, both in premise and plot development. Worth it all the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars The guy above is so lost..., July 7, 2008
This review is from: Phoenix, Vol. 6 (Phoenix (Viz)) (Paperback)
I have no clue as to why the first reviewer has to give the book a single star when the review needs to reflect the literature and NOT the failure of the delivery service.

That is neither here nor there. Every single Tezuka book in the Phoenix series deserves at least 4 stars. Nostalgia is no different. The artwork is fantastic (especially for those that are fans of the oldschool Astroboy anime). Consistent with other Phoenix books, Nostalgia reflects Tezuka's takes on older stories and legends. I don't want to say much more since those that are reading this review have most likely read the other 5 books in the series.

The crowd that enjoys the Phoenix series is very small to begin with, and I would hate to see its size suffer even more because of a careless single starred review.

Read every book in this series.
