Book Description

Phoenix (Viz) September 12, 2006
Considered by many the peak of Osamu Tezuka's artistic achievement and called his "life work" by the author, PHOENIX is made up 12 complex stories linked by the presence of the mythical bird, an immortal guarden of the universal life force. Read in order, the separate stories jump across time, alternating between a distant future and a distant past, converging on the present, with characters from one story being reincarnated in another. The 12 stories over 3000 pages.

About the Author

Regarded by many as the "God of Manga" Osamu Tezuka was born in 1928 in Toyonoka, in Osaka, Japan. A prolific author and artist, Tezuka is generally regarded as the single figure responsible for developing Japan's massive manga and anime industries. His cinematic art style and novelistic narratives have made his work as universally accessible and relevant now as when first published in Japan. A list of his well-known and universally loved work includes the classic JUNGLE EMPEROR LEO (also known as Kimba the White Lion), BLACK JACK, ADOLF, MIGHTY ATOM (known as ASTRO BOY in the U.S.) and METROPOLIS (recently made into a hit anime film). Tezuka continued creating comics until his death in 1989.

More About the Author

Osamu Tezuka (1928-89) is the godfather of Japanese manga comics. He originally intended to become a doctor and earned his degree before turning to what was then a medium for children. His many early masterpieces include the series known in the U.S. as Astro Boy. With his sweeping vision, deftly interwined plots, feel for the workings of power, and indefatigable commitment to human dignity, Tezuka elevated manga to an art form. The later Tezuka, who authored Buddha, often had in mind the mature readership that manga gained in the sixties and that had only grown ever since. The Kurosawa of Japanese pop culture, Osamu Tezuka is a twentieth century classic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Age of Tears, December 22, 2006
This review is from: Phoenix, Vol. 8 (Phoenix (Viz)) (Paperback)
The civil war continues ruthlessly as the two sides fight each other and themselves. Lives are wasted and madness reigns as both sides seek the Phoenix and its immortality-granting blood. Its failure to do anything for anybody does not stop the search. Friends become foes again and again and again as all are consumed by the age.
And the Phoenix watches as the doomed play and replay their parts endlessly.

One more grandiose and touching tale by Ozamu Tezuka. One more that ends sadly for everybody.

And the Phoenix watches it all.

3.0 out of 5 stars Phoenix vol 8 review, January 3, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Phoenix, Vol. 8 (Phoenix (Viz)) (Paperback)
Not one of Tezuka's best works. This is a two volume piece, that for me just got drawn out. I have read all of the phoenix volumes (published) these two civil war volumes so far have been the most uneventful. Right now i am reading ode to Kirihito, a longer medical thriller by Tezuka, quite interesting, a different beat for Tezuka. All in all the pheonix saga is great, buddha series is great, does this guy create anything that is not great? Dont forget Tezuka was putting this stuff out 30 and 40 years ago. From a distant planet I think so.
