I typed in cd to search for this item. A picture of a cd came up. What I got was a cassette tape.

1.0 out of 5 stars Phonemic Awareness (ISBN 0-439-66114-5), July 27, 2010

I ordered this direct from Amazon (not a 3rd party) for a professor in our department. Clearly, it's advertised with a CD (the book is a moot point without it!). The book that was sent did NOT have the CD with it. I will be returning it and ordering from someone else.

This is deceptive advertising.Phonemic Awareness Songs & Rhymes

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful introduction to phonics, simple and effective, February 24, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
My son's teachers taught phonics using this book and cd.

The teachers first introduced the children to the phoneme and then reinforced recognition by teaching the poem used to highlight the sound. In the middle of the week they photocopied the poem or song page for the children to bring home. With the parent's assistance the child's assignment was to go through the poem and circle the phoneme every time they heard it and then color the picture on the page.

In other words, the poem for short a is "Rags":

I hAve a dog, his nAme is rAgs.

He eats so much his tummy sAgs.

His ears flip-flop, his tale wig-wAgs,

and when he walks he goes zig-zAg."

All the a's that I've capitalized, are the phonemes the children are supposed to circle. This format is beautiful and best of all effective in it's simplicity.

I used this book and method to teach my youngest because she loved what her oldest brother was doing. She still listens to the songs on her Ipod and they are among her favorite songs. Now that they are older she and her oldest brother still have fun reciting these poems and songs together.
