Phonics and Word Study is designed to help students develop the skills necessary for independence in reading. Level E begins with review activities for the maintenance of skills generally taught in the first four grades. The book emphasizes variant vowel sounds and vowel spellings. It also addresses consonants, consonant blends, consonant digraphs, contractions, compound words, plurals, possessives, prefixes, suffixes, and base words. Additional skills concern changes made to base words before adding suffixes, syllabication, and dictionary skills such as alphabetical order, guide words, entry words, the pronunciation key, the schwa, primary and secondary accents, homographs, and homophones. This book also covers synonyms and antonyms.
