Grade 1-3–Penny Star is a young fashion designer who solves mysteries, and children will enjoy solving them with her. In Smart Boys, two brothers constantly try to outwit their parents (and usually succeed). Their wild projects and inventions will appeal to young readers, even though the situations are pretty far-fetched. Each book consists of three short stories that, according to the inside cover, encourage the practice of phonemic awareness, phonics skills, fluent reading, vocabulary building, and text comprehension. There are sight words and story words at the end for reading comprehension and vocabulary building. The colorful cartoons are humorous and do much to reinforce the text, and the comic-book format is clear and not too busy.
