2.0 out of 5 stars Classroom Teacher's Review, February 13, 2011
This review is from: ABEKA HOME SCHOOL BOOK (Phonics & Reading Curriculum/ Lesson Plans, Includes Language, Spelling, Poetry, and Activity Time) (Paperback)
Abeka is a Christian curriculum. In college I wrote several lessons on this curriculum at different age levels. Many people choose this curriculum for homeschooling because it is a Christian curriculum.

I taught K & 1st grade in a Christian school and have even taught our Chapel program. Using a Christian curriculum is not the only way to incorporate your beliefs or God's Word into your school day. Purposeful training in God's Word comes from the teacher & parents.

I gave this curriculum 2 stars for several reasons. This curriculum is not teacher friendly, making it hard to teach & plan from. It also lacks in creativity as far as activities. Lastly, it has poor judgement of age appropriateness---their material exceeds the understanding of the age level it is written for.

I suggest Saxon Phonics as a great phonics & reading program. For biblical integration, we used a lot of writing activities & coded common Christian words. I also found some Christian character books that we read that correlated with what we were learning. For example, we might be learning the final stable syllable -ble, so we would code the word bible.
