The instructions for presenting lessons to the new reader are clear and well-organized. The progression of lessons from less difficult to more difficult sounds is effective. "Phonics for the New Reader" will be great part of any phonics-based reading program. It contains sections for: letter names, shapes and sounds; short vowels; long vowels (e.g. "like"); exceptions (e.g. "love"); consonant combinations (e.g. "ch"); vowel combinations (e.g. "ee", "ea"); and vowel-consonant combinations (e.g. "ar"). It has example words and sentences for each sound. I am finding this book very useful in teaching my preschooler to read. The logical progression of the lessons and the simple, clear format are what distinguishes this book from others I've been looking at. It's not intended to be a complete program, just complementary to whatever program you're using.

I used this book to help my daughter when she was 4. It was unbelievable how quickly she became a reader after we finished this book. It's a very simple book. The author presents the sound and rule and then provides some examples and a sentence for practice. We did 1 rule a day for a few weeks and her reading took off. She is now six and reading at 3rd grade level. I lent the book to a friend to use with her daughter and she is seeing the same thing. It's too bad this book isn't widely available but your library might have it.

This small book packs all the important things needed for a new reader. Why go for $200 phonics packages?If you are serious to teach your kid to read, buy this book and you probably won't need any more books.
