5.0 out of 5 stars This is a fantastic book!
If you teach children to read and are looking for ways to construct a meaningful language arts program, you need to read this book. Phonics That Work! is very user-friendly and full of practical ideas. Janiel Wagstaff does a great job! I truly enjoyed reading this book. It has changed the way I teach.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do Not Waste Your Money
I'm always looking for phonics books to read in order to improve my teaching methods. Well, this is an old book. It was published in 1999. As a former reading specialist, I was shocked to discover that it focused on using a new method to teach phonics...onset and rimes. This was...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Functional and Realistic Approach to Teaching Reading, February 21, 2003
This review is from: Phonics that Work! New Strategies for the Reading/Writing Classroom (Paperback)
Ms. Wagstaff's book, Phonics That Work, takes an enlightening approach to teaching reading. Her ideas for making a classroom actively engaged in the literature they read and write are fabulous and realistic. She takes a researched-based look at how students learn to read and applies functional and creative ideas for making them work. I recommend this book to any one who wants to give their students the best opportunity for reading success.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Phonics that Work! New Strategies for the Reading/Writing Classroom (Paperback)
I'm always looking for phonics books to read in order to improve my teaching methods. Well, this is an old book. It was published in 1999. If you have graduated within the past 5-7 years, you learned all of her suggestions in school. As a former reading specialist, I was shocked to discover that it focused on using a new method to teach phonics...onset and rimes. This was new in 1999? I guess so. It also incorporates a 'whole language' focus. Any current reading teacher knows that a comprehensive, balanced literacy program is needed in the classroom...not just whole language.
If you are currently teaching in a primary classroom, do not spend your hard earned money on this old book. You already know how to teach onset and rimes.
