As I write this, this book is on back order. This is a great resource for primary teachers who would like explicit information on how to do a word wall and use many activities for using word families, etc. to teach phonics. But don't bother waiting for this book to be available again. Get the 3rd edition! It's worth the extra money. I purchased the 2nd edition several months ago, but when I examined the 3rd edition at the library, I noticed there seem to be many more activities and games for teaching phonics. The 3rd edition easily gets a 5+ star rating from me. It would be an invaluable resource, especially for new teachers! Making Words, by Cunningham and Hall is a good companion if you need help with the making words activities.

Patricia Cunningham has provided a resource in this book that Reading teachers should not do without. The ideas are easily put into use in the classroom. Chapter 3, High Frequency Words, shows how to use a Word Wall to teach the reading and spelling of common words. This book is written in easy to understand language and is enhanced by real classroom photos. It's a book you'll find yourself reading over and over!

This was one of the texts for my reading methods classes when I got my teaching credential. I've used it more than many of my other resources. If you're goal is to teach children to read, you need this book! Whole language advocates (of which I am one) will love it, too!!!

This is a great, practical how-to book that every teacher should read. It is easy to read and full of ideas and activities that you can use in your classroom. The hands-on, activity based ideas can be used with all ages and all levels

This book is full of great activities and strategies for teaching reading. It is not like the typical phonics lessons found in workbooks and basal series. You won't even know that you are teaching phonics! Who ever thought it could be fun! The kids love it and the teachers who use it do too!

I found this guide to be extremley helpful. It provides an overview of all the components of literacy for young children and gives a ton of great lesson ideas. I went to a workshop on literacy and everything the leaders were demonstrating came right out of this book. I recommended it to everyone there! I'll be teaching spec. ed 1st-3rd grade this year and I can adapt every activity to my classroom. I am very excited to implement Cunningham's ideas!

I can't say enough about this book and how it changed the experience of the children in my classroom. As a volunteer teacher in a developing country, I had no experience and even less guidance when I began to teach elementary school last year. I brought many books on children's literacy with me and this is the *only* one I used. Patricia Cunningham knows how children learn and understands the basic tools that teachers must have if they are going to teach reading and writing. About 1/4 of my students were reading when I started the year, and by the end they could almost all form their own basic written sentences on paper and *all* of them could read very simple sentences. I would give this ten stars if I could. Buy it.

As a college student I am using this book for one of my classes. Being an "older" college student I remember the days of when Phonics was done out of a workbook. Sound out the letters, write the letters repeat. This book is full of ideas and games a teacher or parent can use to practice phonics with their kids in a way that is not so boring or mundane. Had my teachers had access to a book like this when I was in grade school my school career may have been a little better. This book has a lot to offer in what looks like a small amount of pages. It's easy to read, not your typical text book. I hate reading text books and this one was no problem for me.

This product has helped me in my work with struggling readers. There are a lot of ideas that help children who need to focus on building word analysis skills.

I too had this for my reading methods class. I totally agree with the other responses. It is an excellent reference book
