4.0 out of 5 stars Be Aware of the Contents!
If you are a user of Hemera Photo Objects 50,000 Volumes I or II, you've grown accustomed to seeing 8 CDs and a Paperback Photo Catalog in the Box. Well, with Photo Objects Volume 3, there are only 7 CDs in the box (I initially thought my package had been mis-packed), but Hemera still packs in over 50,000 photo objects. Also, unlike Volumes I or II, Hemera has...

The Hemera "Photo Clip Art 150,000" contains almost all the images in this collection, but this is nearly 4x the price for 1/3 the images. What is the difference? The images here have about a 20% higher resolution and transparency masks (i.e. Photo Clip Art forces you to have a colored background, but you can have no background with photo objects).

Neither is really suitable for print unless you don't want to print any of the photos beyond 2 inches high/wide. If you're designing for the web, you're usually going to throw a background in behind photos anyway, or if you need the transparency, you can easily select some obscure color for the background and "magic wand" it out in 30 seconds.

So, if you bought the whole photo objects collection, you'd spend nearly ten times as much to get mostly the same photos (i.e. Photo Clip Art has 26 photos of an Asian woman as a nurse while Photo Objects has the same 26 photos plus 3 more) a little larger and with transparency.

If you're a professional designer who would use this extensively, the extra cost might be worth it. But if you're dabbling in web design, get the "Photo Clip Art 150,000" instead and save yourself a LOT of money.

2. integration of vol.1 and vol.2

Negative (things that got worse since vol.1&2):
1. no image catalog (book) that used to be included with the vol.1&2. Yet, the price is still the same as before. It was nice to have the book and decide what images I want before actually doing it on computer.
2. I haven't found the usual "image fonts" in this volume.
3. Integration is somewhat weird starting with vol. 3. Why change the system that was working perfectly fine.
4. On-line? Why would I buy 50,000 images and want to get online and buy more? Yet I think that this online feature is slowing down things (although, it can be turned off).

Overall: not as good as Vol.1, but pic quality better than in Vol.2. Still, Hemera is cutting cost by not including the usual image catalog and changing things (user interface) that have been working fine before.

1.0 out of 5 stars New Version lacks speed and elegance of previous, April 21, 2003

If you loved version 1 and 2, stop now. I wholeheartedly supported this developer's product in its earlier verions, but version 3 for mac is painfully slow in executing searches, lacks key functions of the previous versions, and has totally disappointed me. I won't be investing in future volumes.

While you can search all previous versions and companion Hemera products, (Big Box of Art Series) You can no longer copy the source cd's to a drive to eliminate the disc swapping syndrome without buying a separate and costly "network licencse" so the ease of use and speed are totally negated. You must CD swap, for all your earlier verions too so think about floppping around some 48 CDs!! This new version also must search out and connect to an online component every launch, despite turning this feature off, seaching is painfully slow. I have gone back to version 1 & 2, and my stand alone BBoA and put vol 3 back into the box, the images contained in this latest copy aren't a real addition to the previous volumes anyway.

This product is horrible.

The images of trucks, vehicles, cars are toys!! This is not a product that can be used professionally by a company looking to keep desktop publishing in-house.

Even for free-lance work, most of these images are too cheesy to use...I would be embarrassed.

There are far too many photo objects of the same item from different angles. More of a variety would be nice. I haven't yet found one photo object I can use either for our web-site, marketing material or ads.

Suggestion: Unless the images on the box are exactly what you need & the only images you need, DO NOT waste your time.

If only there were a way for us to view a comprehensive set of thumbnails before considering purchase.....

Very disappointed, wish Amazon had negative star ratings.

I just bought it and installed the software. I went through almost all the pictures (50,196) and unfortunately, i couldn't find anything i can use :(

Some of the people on here writing positive reviews either work for Hemera (BEWARE) or are complete MORONS!

Don't buy this software. It's horrible.

Well, with Photo Objects Volume 3, there are only 7 CDs in the box (I initially thought my package had been mis-packed), but Hemera still packs in over 50,000 photo objects. Also, unlike Volumes I or II, Hemera has eliminated the hard copy catalog of photos as well.

Still, their photo picker software works well enough that the book is not completely necessary, although I'm sure that some hard copy fans may be disappointed. If you rely on this software, and browse images a lot, I'd recommend installing the photos on your hard drive, because swapping between multiple CDs can get tedious. I think a single disc DVD version will also be available if it is not already out.

Photo quality is what you'd expect if you're used to Volumes I and II, and the selection is quite wide as well. Overall, quite a nice collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Photo Objects Work for Me!, April 9, 2003
This review is from: Photo Objects 50,000 Vol 3 (CD-ROM)
Let me first of all say that I am NOT a Hemera employee--I have worked in military and public education for many years. I make extensive personal and professional use of the Hemera Photo Objects collections for websites, newsletters, and presentation aids, and I'm very pleased to see that they are offering this new collection. In my humble opinion, Photo Objects are colorful and clean cut--the images of children are especially nice. Perhaps the selection is somewhat generic and mainstream; but in my experience, they also are easily related to by a broad spectrum of people. I find the Photo Object software very easy to use--I simply select an image from the thumbnails, choose the options I want (background, sizing, etc.), then save the image in the best file format for my needs. I wouldn't presume to speak for anyone else, but the Photo Objects collections are a great, affordable graphics resource for me.

1.0 out of 5 stars COMPLETE PIECE OF ..., March 29, 2003

WE ARE A WEB DEVELOPMENT COMPANY AND ARE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR GOOD PHOTOS, OBJECTS, AND COLLECTIONS OF ART WORK THAT WE CAN USE IN OUR WEB PAGES. UNFORTUNATELY, THIS COLLECTION "PHOTO OBJECTS" volume III IS ALMOST COMPLETELY WORTHLESS.

WE WERE HARD PRESSED TO FIND EVEN ONE USABLE IMAGE. MOST OF THE PHOTOS ARE FROM THE EARLY 1900'S FEATURING ROTARY PHONES, OLD ANTIQUES, WORLD GLOBES, ETC.

I WILL BET YOU TO FIND ONE PICTURE THAT IS FROM THE 1990'S - 2003. THERE ARE NONE. NO PHOTOS OF BUILDINGS, OF CITIES, OF TECHNOLOGY, OF BUSINESS, OF PROFESSIONALS.

WHAT'S WORSE IS THAT THERE ARE DUPLICATIONS FOR ALMOST EVERY IMAGE. THEY THINK THAT IF THEY CHANGE THE ANGLE, IT'S A DIFFERENT PICTURE. THINK AGAIN...

Sigh.........program will not run or install unless you close absolutely everything including antivirus. I'm not comfortable with that. Support has no interest in responding unless you're paying for it.
