I've read Scott's three digital photography books and learned quite a bit from them but being able to see exactly how he achieved the look that he did has greatly increased my knowledge of lighting setup and much more. I liked the videos and found them informative in Scott Kelby's pleasant, casual style, but there were only sixteen brief tips. Not worth the cost of this expensive package and many are repeats of what's in his previous Digital Photograpy books (1-3). There is a companion paperback book that is attached to the cardboard box (difficult to remove without tearing) and it's just a recap of what's on each clip, The type is small and hard to read. If you are new photographer looking to learn more and don't mind spending extra money, you may find some of the tips helpful. Your better off buying his 3 excellent books on Digital Photography.: Scott Kelby's Digital Photography Boxed Set, Volumes 1, 2, and 3

I've read Scott's three digital photography books and learned quite a bit from them but being able to see exactly how he achieved the look that he did has greatly increased my knowledge of lighting setup and much more. As Andrew pointed out in his review this is as close as you can get to having Scott in the room telling you how to get the shot. An additional bonus is you can download all of the content from the DVD onto your iPod. The only nit that I have about the combo is that you can't play the DVD on your TVs DVD player. It was designed to be played on the computer only. In Scott's defense though I would imagine providing a DVD that would play on the TV would have driven up the cost due to the different formats required. Besides being able to download the entire content of the DVD onto my iPod Touch more than makes up for not being able to watch it on my TV. Without question this is the BEST $30 I've spent on photography. If/When there's another release in this series I will order as soon as Amazon is accepting orders for it. Thank you, Scott and your team, for sharing your knowledge with us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally Awesome Book/DVD Combo, January 6, 2010

Scott Kelby has hit the ball out of the park yet again with this Book/DVD combo. He has taken the most practical sections of his digital photography books and created a DVD ROM (works on your computer rather than TV) that shows exactly how he set up and shot the photographs. As far as I'm concerned this is about as close to having Scott at my shoulder telling me how to take the photograph as I'm going to get without him being actually with me. Very cool! Certainly took me from thinking that it couldn't be THAT easy to 'gee, even I stand a chance at getting that style of shot'.

Couldn't be happier with the combo and I'm looking forward to the next volume.

First off I want to say that I am a huge supporter of Scott Kelby, NAPP, kelby training, etc...I have spent a LOT of money towards his products over the years, and have been very happy.

Review:

- Great information overall!

- The packaging was definitely overkill!

- The videos were a little disappointing in comparison to some of his other work (kelby training, kelby TV). I felt they were much too short and seemed a little rushed. I'm guessing it was shot all in the same day as it was in one location.

- The fact it was only a DVD ROM that couldn't play in my home DVD player wasn't that big of a deal only because we were supplied the files to play on mobile devices. This is a GREAT feature, and i hope more of his products will be supplied like this in the future. It makes it very easy for me to watch the videos when i travel without taking the DVD.

- Typical Scott Kelby teaching style (which is great!). He makes you feel more like you are just talking to your buddy about photography, rather than sitting in a classroom listening to a lecture.

I look forward to the next project of Scott's.

I received the book and DVD in the mail this afternoon. I got the DVD out of the box and put it in the DVD player only to discover that it can't be played on the tv. I then put it on the computer and discovered that the files are for the ipod. There is also a folder that says Mac on it. I can't use that as I'm on a PC.

I put all 16 lessons on my ipod and sat down and watched them. They show how to shoot using studio lighing. It's very informative.

The book mimics the DVD. It will help you after when you want to access the info fast without watching the videos again.

Apart from the 2 natural light video's you will need strobes to make the same images. Some setups use 2 lights, nice large softboxes, flags and a reflector.

Scott is a great guy, what's not to love. He teaches in a very clear understandable manner. If you haven't tried Kelby Training, give it a shot. I've learned a lot from that and it's only $20 a month. (I'm not affiliated with Kelby Training, except I'm a paying subscriber.)

All of these "tips" can be found online for free through Scott on DTownTV. Im a huge fan of the Kelby products, but this one let me down big time. The book is basically useless and the 16 tips are 3-4 minutes long each. The DVD cannot be watched with a regular DVD player.

Wish I would have spent my money on a month's worth of KelbyTraining and actually learned something.

I'm a huge fan of Scott Kelby and was really excited when I saw this book/video combo. I've watched the videos and they are super cool. I think this was a terrific idea b/c you really get to see how specific shots from Scott Kelby's Digital Photography Boxed Set, Volumes 1, 2, and 3 were created. I would give it 5 stars, but the DVD only plays on your computer, not your DVD player, which isn't clearly stated on product info. page. I was really surprised by that. My other complaint is the amount of packaging that the book came in. A workbook with a DVD-ROM doesn't need all that packaging. Save some trees for us to shoot - note that I'm a hippie environmentalist, so don't let that stop you from getting this wonderful video. Again, the videos are awesome and I will frequently use this as a reference.

This book/DVD combo is awesome. I read the first in Kelby's series of his Digital Photography and loved it so I thought I would try this out. I got it Monday and watched it all on Tuesday. It was great! It was well produced and very clear. I loved how he showed you were to position the lights and yourself and how to improvise when you do not have all your equipment with you. This is well worth the money and will help you get a better understanding how the pros do it. I cannot wait to try it out for myself. I highly recommend it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Hard to Believe Scott Kelby Allowed this to be released, December 9, 2010
This review is from: Photo Recipes Live: Behind the Scenes: Your Guide to Today's Most Popular Lighting Techniques (DVD-ROM)
I have three of Scot Kelby's books and am happy with all of them (elements book, lightroom book, general digital photo. book) but it's hard to believe this one was developed by the same person. There are some casual tips that are OK, but they are on a par with what anyone that knows lighting could tell you without the illustrations. There really isn't much here at all, and what really amazed me was how poor some of the photo examples were. The only rationale I can think of for publishing this book is that its title that includes the words "Behind the Scenes" will somehow make some beginning photographers think they are getting information that is coveted. But it's about as informative as a book that would have the title, "Selecting a lightbulb: Behind the Scenes!!"

This is a very useful video and I love watching Scott on D-Town and Kelby Training. If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch, you may want to get the Photo Recipes Live app, it's the same videos for only $10 !!
