Very helpful to me...,

When I pointed to this site to recommend this book to a friend, I was stunned to see a review of 1 star. Even though I definitely consider myself a novice as well, especially in regard to digital photography, I had no problem learning from this book and following the examples. This book was very helpful in doing what it set out to do - teach photo retouching and restoration. I was very confident in recommending it. Kudos!

I just finished my first photo restoring project and am really impressed with the final result. I just followed the directions step by step and felt that if a klutz like me could do it, anyone should be able to.I'm anxiously looking forward to doing some more pictures when time allows. As a matter of fact, others have asked me to do some of their personal family photos. I recommend this book to anyone interested in photo restoring.

Okay, but not the best...By far,

If you are new to the whole retouching and restoration thing, as I am, then this is a great book. It will give you the basics of everything. As we all know, you have to crawl before you can walk.
That being said. This book is quite a bit out dated. It will still give you the basics, like I said, but there are new, better, and easier ways to do things. The bottom line: If you are new at this sort of thing and want to master the basics: go for it! If you already know how to take red eye out of your pictures, this might be a bit too basic for you.

Great book to start with,

I've checked this book out of the public library a few times and will be getting a used copy soon from one of the used re-sellers here on Amazon. The book mentions Photoshop Elements 1 but is very clear that the basics can be applied to other programs. It turns out the PE version I have is 2.0 that came free with a Wacom tablet purchase years ago. I've found the book very helpful when deciding to 'dig in' and learn to use photo-editing software properly. It starts with the various selection tools and what works best for different purposes. Alot of the tools mentioned are on GIMP, a free software program that's similar to photoshop.
When you've only fooled around with photo editing, such as re-sizing or adding text, learning to use the software properly with a book like this is certainly helpful in the long run, and there's plenty of cheap used copies available. For fancier stuff, there's always youtube video tutorials.

I bought this and, like a fool, didn't check the copyright date (2002). I sat down with my new Photoshop Elements version 8, and read that the author was proudly touting his coverage of the brand new version 2. Utterly useless, way out of date!

Has a lot of good information for restoring photos. I've used it in my restoring of a few photos so far and it has helped with some good tips.

There were maybe two good tricks in there but I wouldn't buy this book new.

Not enough help for a novice,

I bought this book thinking that it would be a good guide and on first reading it it seem to be just that--however when I started to try out some of the examples on my computer, they didn't work. Steps were omitted and since I am a novice I need every step outlined which is what I expect from a "dummies" book. Very disappointing.
