The Old West comes alive through photographs made in the Arizona Territory from its beginning to statehood. Jeremy Rowe, a well-known Arizona photo historian, has combined his unique collection of photographs with his rendering of the history of photography in Arizona, opening a window into one of the most colorful chapters in our western heritage. In addition, the book includes the most comprehensive listing of photographers working in Arizona from 1850 to 1920 together with biographies of each and sources utilized in gathering the biographical information.

Editorial Reviews

Review

. . . an indispensable reference on photography in Arizona and the Southwest. -- Theresa Salazar, Special Collections Librarian, University of Arizona

Rowe's work will be of use to the amateur and professional interested in the history of the American Southwest. -- Louis A. Hieb, Director, Center for Southwest Research, University of New Mexico

About the Author

Jeremy Rowe has been collecting and researching 19th and early 20th century photography for twenty years, and Arizona photographs and photographers are his primary focus. His initial concentration on stereographs, soon expanded to photographic postcards and other formats. While seeking antique photographs, Mr. Rowe compiled a reference list of Arizona photographers and the important views they made. In addition, he studied whatever written record he found related to historic Arizona photography. The result is the most extensive record to date of how, when and by whom this important visual record was made.

Mr. Rowe is the head of Media Development and the Consortium for Instructional Innovation in Information Technology at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. He provides a variety of services relating to the acquisition, reproduction, storage and care of vintage photographic materials and equipment. Mr. Rowe has mounted numerous exhibitions of historical images of Arizona throughout the state, and has consulted on projects like the American Memory project for the Library of Congress. He has lectured or consulated for The Arizona Historical Society, The Arizona Historical Foundation and Arizona Collection at Arizona State University, The Heard Museum, Arizona Humanities Council, Southwest Oral History Association, Central Arizona Museum, Sharlot Hall Museum, University of Arizona, Northern Arizona University, and numerous private collectors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Photographs Par Excellance!, May 17, 2011
This review is from: Photographers in Arizona 1850-1920 : A History & Directory (Hardcover)
Thoroughly enjoyed the book as it reveals some very fine and early photographs of Arizona's pioneers. I believe every shelf ought to have a copy and I bought one for my children who are studying Arizona history to enliven their understanding of the period. Unless we share these old photos, how can we truly understand the sacrifices others have made for us. Photographs are the windows of the mind. Great Job!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Photographers in Arizona 1850-1920, November 15, 2007
This review is from: Photographers in Arizona 1850-1920 : A History & Directory (Hardcover)
I found Jeremy Rowe's book an excellent source of information on not only the photographers and technology of photography, but of the culture and sociology of the late 19th century period in Arizona. I was especially interested in his directory of photographers working in various areas in the Territory. I think this book has wonderful value to genealogists whose family history was linked to the area and time.

1.0 out of 5 stars limited history as a hobby, October 23, 2005
This review is from: Photographers in Arizona 1850-1920 : A History & Directory (Hardcover)
In my opinion Mr Rowe's hobby turned into a book is an incomplete at best catalogue of a few pcitures taken by a few photographers in the southwest.Photographs are scant and photographers are noticibly missing i.e. Rassmussen. A poor choice for anyone interested in a comprehensive guide.
