This review is from: American Photographers of the Depression Farm Security Administration Photographs 1935-1942(Pantheon Photo Library) (Paperback)
Originally published in 1985 as a paperback (check Product Details for the size) and now amazingly scarce enough to justify a high price. I don't think it's worth the prices I've seen because, though the contents are five star the stiff board cover makes it annoyingly difficult to look through and after all these years the perfect binding will not have held up too well so I've given it three stars.
The sixty-one photos are an excellent selection of the usual FSA photos from eleven photographers. Included are Lange's Migrant mother, Rothstein's Cimarron County dust storm and some Walker Evans Hale County series. The front pages have an interesting short intro by Charles Hagen and the photographers get biographies in the back. Bearing in mind the publishing date the book references are now rather dated. I think this paperback would be an excellent introduction to the wonders of FSA photography. There is another edition available: American Photographers of the Depression: Photographs from Farm Security Administration, 1935-42 (Photofile), both are excellent print jobs but I really don't think either edition is worth more than ten to fifteen dollars. ***SEE SOME INSIDE PAGES by clicking 'customer images' under the cover.
