Book Description

0201884003 978-0201884005 March 1996
This book will show you how to turn your Mac or PC into a digital darkroom. The Photographer's Digital Studio is written for people who already know how to create images using conventional photo gear and techniques but may not be familiar with their digital equivalents. In a clear, step-by-step fashion and using the concepts and language of traditional photography, the book explains: how digital images are constructed vs. film images; the basic computer gear needed to make the switch to digital photography; how to import images into digital form; how to manipulate those photos for the best results; and how to output them in accurate and useable form. Special emphasis is placed on using Photoshop, the application of choice for digital image manipulation.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

The Photographer's Digital Studio teaches traditional photographers all about digital photography. The book offers guidance on buying the hardware and software you need to get started, including whether to buy a Windows or Macintosh system and what to look for in a monitor. The next part of the book covers the technology behind digital cameras, video cameras, and scanners--as well as what products to look for when buying. There's also information on lab processes, such as Photo CD, and how to use several popular Windows and Macintosh image editors, such as Adobe Photoshop, Fractal Design Painter, Corel Photo-Paint, Micrografx Picture Publisher, Jasc's Paint Shop Pro, Pixel Resources' PixelPaint Professional, Color It!, and plug-ins. The Photographer's Digital Studio also provides a thorough discussion of output, which ranges from image management and screen savers to printers, color management, and service bureaus. A full-color insert illustrates a number of image-editing techniques. The back of the book features a glossary of digital imaging terms and a list of manufacturers of cameras, scanners, and software.

3.0 out of 5 stars Accurate, but outdated, June 7, 1999
By
This review is from: The Photographers Digital Studio: Transferring Your Photos Into Pixels (Paperback)
This book must have been an excellent guide when it was first published. But we all know what three years can do to this technology - the book is simply outdated. When I ordered it, I forgot to look at the "published" date. The book emphasizes specific equipment and software, some of which has long lost it's leadership in this market. It needs to be updated.

2.0 out of 5 stars Desperately in need of a re-write, December 7, 2000
This review is from: The Photographers Digital Studio: Transferring Your Photos Into Pixels (Paperback)
The view from December 2000 is that this 1996 edition is now seriously outdated. This book was a handy reference when it came out in '96 but much has changed since then.

It's somewhat of an embarrassment for Peachpit to continue marketing this edition.
