5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what i needed
I knew that there was far more to Colorado than I've seen. What I needed was a book to tell me where to go, when to go there, and what I can expect to see there. This book is exactly that. It details 100 different locations in the Colorado Rockies, divided in to four geographic areas.

1.0 out of 5 stars Photographer's Guide to the Colorado Rockies
I can't begin to describe my disappointment in this book. It is very short - less than 100 pages, and not worth the money spent. The chosen favorite spots in this book just have general descriptions. I need to know how long it will take to get to a location, difficulty, if hiking will be required so I can plan accordingly, and exactly where some of these locations...

There are many photogenic areas of Colorado, and if this book is any indication, I should be very busy every weekend next year.

I can't begin to describe my disappointment in this book. It is very short - less than 100 pages, and not worth the money spent. The chosen favorite spots in this book just have general descriptions. I need to know how long it will take to get to a location, difficulty, if hiking will be required so I can plan accordingly, and exactly where some of these locations actually are. In a photographic guide, you expect to know where exactly a photo was taken not just a very general area like Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, as well as what filters were used for the photo, medium, etc. I have walked this park, and it is huge. For someone not familiar with the area, it would be very frustrating not to know exactly where the example location photo in the book was taken.

If you are looking for scenic books on Colorado, I would recommend Colorado Scenic Guide: Northern Region and Colorado Scenic Guide: Southern Region. These books are split into the northern and southern parts of the state. While they are not photgraphic guides, they do contain alot more detail on each site such as the quality of scenic beauty, how to access the site, time needed to get there, best time of day for a photo, elevation, best time of year for visit, directions, and a small map for each location. In the Northern book alone there are over 50 scenic places listed to visit.

I think the maps and illustrations could have been better. It serves the function of being a guide to good photo locations, but it was not nearly as good or useful as say "Photographing the Southwest: Southern Utah"

Photographing the Southwest: Volume 1--Southern Utah (2nd Ed.) (Photographing the Southwest)

This book was well done with in depth descriptions of the photo ops, how to get there, the best times to be there, where to go to see things other photographers don't, etc. This book, however, will only serve as a general guide of where to do and not much more.

I am going to Rocky Mountain National Park soon. First time there. The book is written in narrative form which is fine but I'd like to see these types books provide a bullet list at the beginning of each description that provides succinct information about the location such as 1.) best time of day 2.) best angle 3.) e/w/n/s direction 3.) best season etc. This would help those who do not have time to read an entire chapter to get the information required fast. As most Photogs know you've got a Golden Hour in the morning and one at night. I am not saying I do not shoot outside of these times, but these times are critical. This information would also help the first timers to a given Park plan where to be at dawn or sunset as we all know that to avoid being in the wrong place at the wrong time with the light changing by the second is why we buy these guides. In narrative form, all of the data one needs to be in or near the right area at the right time is not always provided. A standardized bullet list would focus the author's attention to providing the same information for all locations.
