5.0 out of 5 stars A Refreshing Presentation
I've read several other books on the subject of photographic filters. Most concentrate on the physics of light and how filters affect light. Lee Frost's book finally got it right. He avoids a lot of technical detail and concentrates on the practical applications of filters, grouping them by their use: polarizers, ND's, color correction, B&W, etc. This format makes it...

I was disappointed at the high-level practically useless info in this book. The author glosses over filter details...case in point is the chapter on the popular color conversion filters. I found more info on manufacturer websites than I did reading this book. There are also quite a few photos that don't have anything to do with the filters being discussed. If they forgot...

This format makes it easier to gain an everyday working knowledge of filters.

I own other books by Frost, and I've always enjoyed his writing style. It's down to earth. The photos in the book are excellent. Most show before and after results of filter use. In addition, Frost always includes complete exposure data for each photo, making it simple to duplicate his efforts.

If you are at all interested in how filters can improve your photography, I highly recommend this book. The photos alone are worth the price of the book!

This book is very easy to read, very easy to understand, and very organized.

I recommend this book for beginners who want to learn about different types of filters and their basic application. Although Lee Frsot included sections where he talked about "creative application" of filters, there weren't enough to satisfy an intermediate photographer.

I am only giving this book 4 stars for the following reasons:
1. There are similar contents on the web that are just as informative, for free. Check out www.tiffen.com or go to B&H's website and look for their free guide on filters.
2. The book lacked a section for reverse references. Meaning, the book is organized by filter type. "This filter is used for this situation for this effect." What I was hoping for was a filter guide organized by situations photographers face, as in "If you're taking pictures under this situation, you can use this filter to achieve this effect."

Overall, this is a great, beautifully printed book. But it could have definitely been more.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book, highly recommended., October 18, 2004

Good, consistent coverage of the subject. Well balanced, not too dry and technical, yet without sacrificing the value of the content. Clear examples, great writing style, richly illustrated. It would not take a lot of effort to learn new tricks and techniques from this book, and apply these to come up with great photos. Whether you shoot film or digital, filters DO make A LOT of difference, this book will teach you HOW! Suitable for all experience levels in photography. I bought it bundled with its duo, The Complete Guide to Night and Low-Light Photography, another great title. Great value for money and a great investment (photography teaching workshops will charge you hundreds, even thousands of Dollars and they may not teach you quite as much as these two books can).

5.0 out of 5 stars Best practical book on filters., March 20, 2005

This review is from: The Photographer's Guide to Filters (Paperback)
This is probably the best book on filters ever written. Frost is clear and practical in his explanations and recommendations of brand and uses of the various types of filters. This book helped me decide on my brand of filters and their best uses.

I would recommend this book for anyone who has no clue which filter or brand to invest in. Even a pro would learn a thing or two in here. You would find great tips on how to make adjustments to filters, and their best uses. It's a great reference book for anyone.

I was disappointed at the high-level practically useless info in this book. The author glosses over filter details...case in point is the chapter on the popular color conversion filters. I found more info on manufacturer websites than I did reading this book. There are also quite a few photos that don't have anything to do with the filters being discussed. If they forgot to write down the details when the photo was taken, then don't put the photo in the book. If the author is going to include a photo then they should mention what filter was used. After all, it's a book about filters not a photo album of pretty pictures he's taken here and there. The photos are generally nice but not spectacular...save yourself some money and download the filter catalog from B+W. It's free and you'll learn just as much if not more.

This book is very practical and keeps you gripped with nice theory, pictures and unique ideas. I never used filters for my shoots except Polarizer and UV. This book has good intro on all filters, best brands .. what is the right filter for the moment .. etc. This book is highly recommended for people who want to experiment with filters. This book has helped me understand the usage of filters and their application. The book also helped me to kind of get an idea of how will be my final picture before taking it. It was good experimenting for me.
