Book Description

With the release of the DSC-RX100 II camera, Sony has built upon the success of the earlier RX100 model, adding a hot shoe, tilting LCD screen, Wi-Fi capability, upgraded digital sensor, and other enhancements. White Knight Press, which published a well-received guide to the RX100, has just released Photographer’s Guide to the Sony RX100 II, a new book that addresses all of the new features of the RX100 II and includes a full discussion of the many advanced features that are common to both camera models.

With the publication of this book, author Alexander White provides users of the RX100 II with a guide to all operations, features, menus, and controls of the camera. Using a tutorial-like approach, the book shows beginning and intermediate photographers not only how to accomplish things with the RX100 II, but when and why to use the camera’s features. The book does not assume specialized knowledge by the reader as it explains topics such as autofocus, manual focus, depth of field, aperture priority, shutter priority, exposure compensation, white balance, and ISO sensitivity. The book provides details about the camera’s numerous shooting modes as well as its menu options for shooting, playback, setup, and special effects. The book includes complete coverage of the new features of the RX100 II, including the capability to transfer images and videos over a wireless network and to control the camera remotely with a smartphone or tablet.

The book includes nearly 400 color photographs that illustrate the camera’s controls, display screens, and menus. The images also provide examples of the photographs that can be taken using the RX100 II’s Photo Creativity settings, which alter the color processing of images; the Scene shooting mode, with settings that are optimized for various subjects, including landscapes, portraits, and action shots; the Creative Style and Picture Effect menu options, which offer dramatic options for altering the appearance of images; and the camera’s features for continuous shooting and shooting in dim lighting.

In addition, the book provides introductions to more advanced topics such as infrared photography, street photography, astrophotography, digiscoping, and macro photography.

The book includes a full discussion of the video recording abilities of the RX100 II, which can shoot high-definition (HD) video with stereo sound, and which offers manual control of exposure and focus during movie recording.

In three appendices, the book provides information about accessories for the RX100 II, including cases, external flash units, viewfinders, and filter adapters, and includes a list of web sites and other resources for further information. The book includes an appendix with “quick tips” on how to take advantage of the camera’s features in the most efficient ways possible.

This guide to the RX100 II includes a detailed index, so the reader can quickly find needed information about any particular feature or aspect of the camera.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Manual that Should Have Come with the Camera November 11, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The Sony RX 100 M2 is a complicated piece of kit. The manual supplied in the camera box is completely worthless and the online version very awkward to use and vague on details. Alexander White has hit a home run with this publication. Using plain language and avoiding technical jargon, anyone can master the swathe of features packed into this camera after reading this book. This has saved me hours of wasted time trying to look up things on the internet. A must have for anyone who owns this camera. Note to Sony, hire this guy to write your camera manuals!

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely informative. November 24, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Clear, well written. Everything you need to know about this camera. This book answered many questions I had about this camera and helped me immensely in my decision to buy the camera. Way more informative than Sony's manual and goes well beyond what one would otherwise find easily by surfing various web reviews. The section on accessories is especially useful. The only gap I found was the section on panoramas was a bit too short...perhaps this could be expanded in a future update. Still, this is just a minor quibble. The book is excellent value and an indispensable companion to anyone seeking to get the most out of a very sophisticated camera.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only guide you'll ever need for this camera December 13, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I concur that Sony should include this book with the camera. I look at it this way: You have spent a good deal of money on this camera; why would you not want to learn everything you can about what you can do with it? Even after using the camera for a month, I discovered new features and reasons to use them on nearly every page. You may not use every feature, but you will easily pick up some ideas that will become a new permanent part of your picture taking routine. Without patronizing the reader, with deliberate and careful organization, the writer dissects every nuance of this remarkable machine with clear, readable text, photos, and diagrams. When doing so, the author explains why the particular feature he is describing might be useful in specific situations. The intent of the book is obviously to explain the use of this camera in detail, but a secondary result is that the reader comes away with a greater appreciation and understanding of the photo taking process. Well worth the print edition to keep as reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed to use the RX100M better. November 19, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
All reviews are personnel but what I need in a book on a camera is a detailed description of all the functions, not a treatise on general technical details, like f stops. This book fills the bill. For the beginner there are short clear explanations of why you might want to shoot wide open but the vast majority of the text is about the functions of this camera. Perhaps I should have mentioned that I have the Kindle edition and thus don't know about the quality of the paper version.

Format:Kindle Edition
I purchased the Kindle edition. It is very thorough and well-written with clear instructions and suggestions on how to use this marvelous camera. I blundered around for six months before getting this, and my enjoyment of the camera was greatly increased after learning about its various modes, adjustments and capabilities. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! December 21, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book was extremely helpful. Much more in depth than the manual, and the photos included provided great examples of what the camera is capable of doing. If you are going to spend a substantial amount of money on the Sony DSC-RX 100II, it's certainly worth it to spend a few extra dollars and purchase this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars DSC-RX100 II book January 16, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I researched and found the best point and shoot camera with semi professional qualities in this camera DSC-RX100II Sony.
I love the camera but instructions for it were slim and none. So I bought this book by Alexander White and he does a terrific job explaining the different parts and features of this camera. I would have missed quite a few great features if I have not read this book, in fact I will reread this book to make sure I understand everything and didn't skip over some little known facts on the camera. I highly recommend this book for anyone who bought or might consider the Sony DSC-RX100 II.

5.0 out of 5 stars God Guide to a Powerful Small Camera January 7, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
People who buy a Sony DSC-RX100 II are not typically looking for a point and shoot camera. They're buying a small, portable camera that contains most of the quality and features of a DSLR. If you want to get the most out of this small camera, forget the SONY manual and read this book. It is a great how-to guide and reference, If you buy the Kindle version you can always have it available on your smart phone for use when traveling.
