3.0 out of 5 stars Just OK...
I have purchased travel photography guides in the past. Some have been excellent while others, just so-so. This one is just so-so. Personally, I didn't care for the format of the book as it divided the state into sections. Also, directions were given assuming you were traveling in a specific direction. Come from the other way and it is a little more challenging...

It worked out great and I am so happy that such a book exists. The book can help you to plan your entire trip. The only think I found was it dint have a lot of hidden road information. If the author can add that it would be great. I had to pick that up from the Vermon Fall Forums on the internet. I got the other book describing Maine and now I am planning to get the oregon one. I hope the author will have one out for Alaska and other states.

If you enjoy photography, especially in Vermont, then this is the book for you. I have enjoyed Mr. Middleton's photographs in Vermont Life and found the photos in this book to be even more fantastic. Vermont is a beautiful place and this book will tell you the best spots and the perfect times in which to photograph there. If you need further inspiration take a look at the authors Nature of Vermont, which is an exceptional book as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Handy Companion, December 17, 2006

This review is from: The Photographer's Guide to Vermont: Where to Find Perfect Shots and How to Take Them (The Photographer's Guide) (Paperback)
The book served as a useful companion on my trip to Vermont in October 2006.
It helped me do the groundwork which turned out be a great time saver .
It seems that the book needs editing as some of the landmarks appear to have changed.I would like more details to help locate Farms around Woodstock which is one of the prime reasons photographers travel to Vermont.
Another thing which adds to the difficulty is that you are mostly driving on back roads which are not be very clearly marked .

Personally, I didn't care for the format of the book as it divided the state into sections. Also, directions were given assuming you were traveling in a specific direction. Come from the other way and it is a little more challenging. Want to photograph covered bridges? Some are in here, but there are a lot that aren't. The maps in the book were not of much help either. Twice we failed to find the site we were looking for based on the maps and directions that were given. Only after asking locally for directions did we end up in the right place. The book did give some insight into locations for us to visit, but overall we didn't use the book much.

This review is from: The Photographer's Guide to Vermont: Where to Find Perfect Shots and How to Take Them (The Photographer's Guide) (Paperback)
I purchased this book for my first trip to Vermont for nature and other photography. What I discovered when I received the book is that he has next-to-nothing about the entire northeast corner of the state, which is where I was going. He skips virtually the entire area of Vermont known as the Northeast Kingdom, which includes Island Pond, the Silvio Conte National Wildlife Preserve, the Nulhegan Basin, Brighton State Park, St. Johnsbury, Newport, the entirety of Essex and Caledonia counties, Echo Lake, Crystal Lake State Park, Brownington and many other similar areas. I can't imagine that there is nothing to photograph in this part of Vermont. You can't call a book "The Photographer's Guide to Vermont" and then exclude an entire region of that state. Incidentally, the region known as the Northest Kingdom is featured in the "National Geographic Guide to America's Hidden Corners". This is the ONLY area of Vermont included in this National Geographic guide. Clearly, National Geographic knows something David Middleton does not and I respect and trust National Geographic. Since I had no need whatsoever for this book, I returned it. I also note that it is very thin for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book made our trip manageable, October 23, 2010

This book was terrific for honing in on what we wanted to see and photograph. Although many photographers would say they don't want a book TELLING them where "the shots" are, this helped my photography buddy and me determine how we wanted to spend our time. The images in the book are beautiful, as well. The section on Cloudland Road gave us our favorite part of the day and we would have never known about its beauty had we not purchased the book.

We recently returned from a week in Vermont. Unfortunately, the weather was variable, but we did manage
to visit a number of locations suggested by David Middleton in his "Photographers Guide to Vermont". The
book was well-written and very helpful. The images included were wonderful. David's pro tips and side
trip suggestions added another dimension to our trip. The book was very readable with some touches of
humor.. We look forward to our next trip to Vermont, where this book will be one of
the first things we pack. We are members of a competitive camera club, always on the lookout for great picture locations. It was almost like having our own guide. Thanks, David.

This book was a huge assistance in finding some of the out of the way locations, barns, covered bridges etc. Even with the road closures and detours we had no problem finding what we wanted to photograph.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book: does exactly what the title says, April 23, 2009
This review is from: The Photographer's Guide to Vermont: Where to Find Perfect Shots and How to Take Them (The Photographer's Guide) (Paperback)
The Photographer's Guide to Vermont is must buy if you are visiting Vermont for photography. This book will guide you to all the good locations in Vermont. If you use this book with a GPS ( which accepts co-ordinates for locations) and the co- ordinates obtained from Google maps then it becomes real easy to find the locations mentioned in the book. The information contained in the book is much better than searching the internet for information especially if you are visiting Vermont for the first time.

The only problem I found with the book was the references made by the author to the locations on the maps provided in the book. Sometimes I found that the places described in the book didn't match the locations on the map. However this becomes a non issue if you use the online maps like google maps in conjunction with this book.
