4.0 out of 5 stars excellent material; examples are not so good
This a great book where in-depth discussion of techniques is concerned. However, the photographic examples provided are less useful and not inspiring, hence 4 stars. The book has helped me greatly in the darkroom though with my techniques. For informing my aesthetic sense, I can think of better titles. I also recommend Larry Bartlett's Printing Workshop for B+W...

3.0 out of 5 stars A good ongoing reference book
My first impression when reading the "text" of this book is that Mr. Rudman clearly understands the various ways to impact the final result of an image from start to finish. It left me with much to think about and opened my head up to possiblities that I had not previously been aware of (much less tried). To that end I applaud Mr. Rudman.

The one thing...

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent reference, December 1, 2001

The only thing that I can find that might be seen as a negative about this book is that Tim seems to print a little darker than i like. Other than that this is without a doubt the best book on printing that I have ever read. From the first chapter on how to properly set up your enlarger through the back cover this book is all usefull. If you want to improve your printing skills this book is a must have! (...)

The one thing that left me a little cold about the book is probably more a matter of taste on my part. I found the examples of the prints to be very heavy, grainy and dark. To be fair, this could have occurred in the reprinting of his work for the book but, for a professional, experience printer, unexceptable.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book for a person who wants to learn about BW Printing, November 19, 2000

The book find useful for every photographer (or even a printer) to learn more about black and white processing and printing. The theory is little bit advanced but if you read again and again you will understand finally how it works. The photos are beautiful. Very very arty. I'm a black and white photographer and printer and this book is my holly bible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Photographs reflects a personal taste, June 1, 2000
I don't agree with one of the reviewers of this book about the quality of photographs being included. Off course this is a personal taste, hence no discussion about that. However they illustrate the idea quite well, which is the most important thing. I find this book as an excellent reference book. It is full of knowledge and experience.

I find myself consulting this book more than Ansel Adams "The Print." The most in-depth source of information on lith printing I have ever seen. Excellent!

4.0 out of 5 stars A useful guide to numerous darkroom techniques., January 31, 1997
By A Customer
The Photographer's Master Printing Course is a useful guide to many of the techniques utilized in the darkroom to produce black and white prints. The book describes a typical darkroom, negatives, and the presentation of prints, but the major emphasis is on printing. A strength of the book is the repeated use of comparison photographs which show the difference between "straight prints" and prints produced using some of the described techniques. Toning receives special attention. The book contains a number of hints wich should be of use even to those with darkroom experience

5.0 out of 5 stars Example or really good book on advance printing, December 7, 2001

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I am quite new to Black and White printing (that is I do my own printing but I am not professional). I am amazed by the wealth of information given in this book on toning, bleaching, multiple printing and so on. Furthermore you could really see what author mean by showing photographs before and after using some bleaching toning or other technics. And photographs by itself don't feel to be unnatural, in a sense, that most of them show some grain in much or less degree depending on used techinics. Of course, some photographers who like gradual soft sort of photography may not like Rudman's harsh contrasty style of depicting nature, but who cares, it's his artistic expression. He could really explain how he got one or another effect. By the way, if at the end you don't like this book you may leave it for the simple fact of its attractiveness. It could serve you as nice coffee table book, quality is superb. Excellent book.

I am an amature photographer who wanted to get into printing my photos. This book was the foundation of my learning. It was very comprehensive and easy to understand. I found that it was technical enough to make you understand the principles, yet pragmatic enough to use immediatly. Mr. Rudman has done a great service to the photographic community.
