5.0 out of 5 stars A very good beginner's book., March 20, 2007
This review is from: The Photographic Eye: Learning to See with a Camera (Hardcover)
I have been interested in photography for quite a while. I've taken many photos, but have never found the elements that i need to understand to compose good images. This book takes you from a know-nothing beginning, through Lines, Shapes, Negative/Positive Space, the grid, etc. It lays an excellent groundwork with lots of examples to get you started with the right way of taking pictures. The assigments are a good way to put the knowledge learned in the book to practical use. No expensive cameras needed, even a cheap 35mm SLR you can find at a thrift store (i found mine with 2 lenses for 19.99) is perfect for this book.

As an experienced amateur photographer with 30 years experience, I've found all photographers seem to get caught up in the technology of new digital cameras and lose all perspective on the fundamentals. This book, though a bit dated regarding technology, is an excellent reference and should be required reading when one ventures into the world of photographic art.

This book takes you on a step-by-step journey with detailed instructions and photographic assignments. It has explanations of the tools as well as many aspects of composition. The chapters are well organized with many examples of photos to guide you in understanding each concept.

I highly recommend this book. Search out used book stores if you can't find a copy online. It is well worth the effort.

This book uses ordinary subjects (stairwells, regular folks, local buildings) to illustrate how to make great pictures...instead of relying on exciting subject matter.

Following this book's advice got me into two photo shows.

I have bought three copies for other friends. Buy it. You WON'T be disappointed.

Sections on architecture, portraits, snapshots...so much. I love it.
