4.0 out of 5 stars A handy and affordable guide to the birds of Sri Lanka, November 14, 2006
By
This review is from: A Photographic Guide to Birds of Sri Lanka (Paperback)
I found this to be a handy and affordable guide that can easily fit into a ladies handbag because of its slim profile.

The color coded corner tabs used to categorize the birds is a very useful feature. Some sort of a color coding to indicate if a given bird is endemic to Sri Lanka or an annual migratory species would be a useful addition.

As a resident of Sri Lanka I carry this book whenever we go on outings. I have observed my family members using this book whenever they come across a bird that they have not noticed before - however one major drawback is that although this book's focus is the "Birds of Sri Lanka" the local Sinhalese name of these birds are not provided. For the average Sri Lankan user of this book, the local name for the bird is far more important and relevant than it's scientific name. For example my nephews always ask me for the Sinhalese name of a bird they are observing and I can't help them unless we are lucky to have someone nearby who happens to know it.

I will gladly give this five stars if some of these small improvements to increase the usefulness of this book can be made when publishing the next edition.

The book is reasonably priced to fit the pocket of the average Sri Lankan family. I found this to be a useful gift item that is well appreciated by most recipients. This book is a must have for all libraries in Sri Lanka and home bookshelves.
