5.0 out of 5 stars An essential, timeless classic
Weston's book is a timeless classic. Sure, it's focus is largely on film photography, and it requires slow, careful, focused, and attentive reading, but the basic concept of exposure is explained here better than in any other popular book on the subject I've read.

From descriptions of different metering systems found in today's cameras, to different ways of...

3.0 out of 5 stars Frustrating read!
I found this book very basic in it's content and many times non-descriptive in its explanations of exposure technique and/or theory. I have read the book cover to cover and found myself scratching my head more than once, saying to myself "what the heck is he trying say here?". 3.0 out of 5 stars Frustrating read!, September 6, 2007

I found this book very basic in it's content and many times non-descriptive in its explanations of exposure technique and/or theory. I have read the book cover to cover and found myself scratching my head more than once, saying to myself "what the heck is he trying say here?". Many of the points the author trys to make are elusive (leaving the reader still not understanding fully) and in attempting to explain his points, he skips around so much(assuming the reader will fill in the blanks) that reading this book is frustrating to say the least. Although some reference is made to digital, majority of the authors references are to film. For beginners for sure, but beginners be forwarned, reading this book first may put a damper on your enthusiasm for photography and at the very least will leave you saying to yourself "I need more thorough and concise explanations".

From descriptions of different metering systems found in today's cameras, to different ways of approaching a scene which is a subject of a photograph, to incidental light metering, and a brief, but sensible introduction to the zone system, this is an outstanding book, written with clarity of purpose and style, which picks up where Peterson's much less inquisitive, and by far more basic Understanding Exposure: How to Shoot Great Photographs with a Film or Digital Camera (Updated Edition) leaves its readers.

I discovered this book in my local library. I liked it so much that I bought a copy to keep as my "photography reference".

It's a great read, easy to digest and is written clearly and concisely.

Full of useful information, tables tips and practical examples.

I have read an a lot of books and articles on photography, this one stands out as the best.

Congratulations Chris Western
