5.0 out of 5 stars More than just the locations, June 11, 2009

This book features plenty of wonderful images and gives you all of the great places to visit in Oregon. I love how the author gives you more than just the location, giving the best times to visit and the suggested lenses to have. There's a great chart as well that quickly breaks down the locations and the photographic value, personal visitation value as well as the difficulty in reaching the different sites. If you want to shoot landscapes in Oregon, this is your guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars All The Best Photo Locations In Oregon, May 13, 2009

Oregon is a beautiful state and outdoor photography opportunities are plentiful. However, without a lot of national parks and other high profile areas, finding the best locations can take years. The author clearly spent years finding all the places in the book and compiling careful notes and amazing images. There is no other guide to photographing Oregon as helpful and comprehensive as this one. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book made my trip, September 29, 2011

I'm a serious amateur photographer and bought this book before heading off on my two-week Oregon driving vacation with my wife. We used it to help plan our trip to the Sisters area, the Columbia Gorge and the Oregon coast. It was super helpful. The Ratings pages at the back are brilliant--with limited time, we knew we couldn't see everything, and that section really helped us plan the trip and decide which spots would be more worthwhile to visit than others, and not just for photography.

We even found the guide more helpful than the other travel guides we brought (like Frommer's Oregon) in terms of providing specific directions for how to get to the locations, and, of course, for how to get the best shots once we got there. We followed the author's advice and bought the Benchmark Maps Oregon Road & Recreation Atlas and the Benchmark Oregon Recreation Map, too, which both proved really handy.

I got many great shots that I wouldn't have gotten without this book's advice on the most photogenic natural locations, the best time of day to shoot, what lenses to bring along on which hikes, suggestions on different compositions, advantages and disadvantages of specific vantage points, and more. This book is really specific! You can use it to plan a very efficient shooting itinerary to maximize your chances of being in the right place at the right time. The scouting and experience he condenses into this book saved me from having to figure out all these things by trial and error over multiple trips, which just isn't possible for someone making a single, first-time trip to an area.

We had a great vacation and the super photos I got are largely thanks to this book.

And by the way, Oregon is cleaner, less crowded, and filled with friendlier people than California. I'm just sayin'.

I purchased this book as a guide for a photography trip through the Hood River area and down the Oregon coast
The book provided great information on the areas I was traveling and gave good detailed info on where to look and when to be there.

This guide was extremely helpful in guiding me through the state to find the most interesting places for photography. Nearly all the sites I passed were included in the guide and the guide thoroughly described each site along with length and difficultly of hikes to visit each one. A few things that were not included in the guide that were a surprise to me in Oregon were the number of mosquitoes (even at Crater Lake when the temp was in the 40s), the fact you are not allowed to pump your own gas, and the low speed limits on nearly all the roads (55mph or less). It took much longer than I anticipated to travel due to the lower speed limits. I would highly recommend this guide, and I plan on returning to Oregon in the future, it was a beautiful state (and much cooler than Texas in the summer)

Excellent book with wonderful color photos that prompt you to want to visit the areas described. I have not yet visited the areas to determine the accuracy of the directions; however, I have visited a number of the places in the book and the reader should have no trouble finding the locations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Gift, December 10, 2011

This review is from: Photographing Oregon (Phototripsusa) (Paperback)
I purchased this book for a photographer and his wife who recently moved to Oregon. It was a birthday present. I perused it before giving it to him and thought it was perfect! The photos, although not as many as I would like, were great. But, more importantly, the information in the book was pertinent for a person new to Oregon who wants to photograph. It tells where to go, what time of the day, angle shots, etc. When he unwrapped the book I explained what it was to be used for and how, he became quite excited and immediately started digging into the book. He and his wife live on the central coast and had not explored any of the state. When he discovered there was an area called the Painted Hills and that we have a dessert as well as mountains he was in awe. Coming from Oklahoma I think it made him feel more "at home".

I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to explore and photograph our wonderful state. Make it a gift for yourself or, as I did, a friend or family member. It's one of those books that will be penciled, doggie eared, and well worn over time. In other words, the perfect gift.

What a gem of a book!! We just moved to Oregon from the east coast, so we're like babies exploring for the first time. I don't need to waste my time on back roads because Greg has documented all the best spots for me to photograph the natural beauty of the state. My only (minor) criticism is that Greg only gives Lithia Park in Ashland two diamonds for photographic interest. I guess it depends on the time of year because the fall in Lithia Park is magnificent for photographers. There are also treasures like the Japanese Garden and the Sycamore Grove. But he's spot on for the other areas I've explored. His photos are absolutely beautiful. I highly recommend this book to photographers, amateur or professional!

This book has great photos. That means a lot to in a photo travel book. Means the photographer knows his / her stuff. I've only done a couple of suggestions from the book. But they were both good suggestions.
