Save time; take better vacation snapshots,
By hayseedPA "hayseedPA" (Springfield, VA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Photographing Yellowstone National Park: Where to Find Perfect Shots and How to Take Them (The Photographer's Guide) (Paperback)
Gustav Verderber was right on the money about everything in this book. If you only have a week to explore, save yourself some time and follow his instructions. He has mapped out when the rainbows appear on the falls, gives advice on where to photograph wildlife. Some of the trails he mentions in his book have since been closed due to erosion or wildlife management but if you talk with the Park Ranger Service (not Xanterra!) you should be able to find a comparable walk to capture the images.
The book may be beneath the experienced photographer but for an amateur who just wants better vacation photos and does not have the luxury to spend a year in the park getting them, this is the perfect guide!

I bought three books to prepare for two days photographing Yellowstone National Park and this was the best. It was very helpful for planning times of day to be in various locations and prioritizing stops. My favorite photo was the rainbow on Lower Falls that occured exactly when the author said it would. If you love photography and don't have a lot of time in the park, this book is a must have!

I found this book to be very good for helping know where to go in the park and when to photograph certain things. I found the actual photography commentary to be of marginal value. Still glad I bought it though because as a guide to the park for photographers it meets the need.

A good book for those planning a trip to Yellowstone, whether you plan to take pictures with a DSLR or point and shoot. The book provides fairly detailed locations and preferred times for taking pictures at select vistas. The book would be improved by including an overall park map (with selected vistas, best times and camera direction to use- which would help with planning itineraries), corresponding photos from recommended locations, and expanding book book to include Teton NP as most folks take in both on the same trip.

Great for photography location information and pretty good when it comes to the actual photography information.
If you are looking for a book to learn where to go get good shots at the park of animals and sights and at what time to get those shots, this is a good book. If you are looking for specific information about photographing wildlife (e.g., where to find what animal), this book isn't as helpful as Watching Yellowstone And Grand Teton Wildlife: The Best Places to Look From Roads and Trails by Todd Wilkerson. Wilkerson's book will give you specific locations for finding specific animals.

Wonderful book. Lots of very useful information for photographers. Well written, good information on places, times to shoot, etc. Would recommend to any photographer going to Yellowstone along with the book by Joseph Lange. With these two books in hand you should be able to bring back some wonderful photographs.

I loved this book! I visited Yellowstone with my friend and my daughter on a "Chick's Only" trip. We planned it for a year. I used this book as my primary source for planning what to see in the park and when to see it.***Even if you're not a photographer, this book is worth the buy just as a planning tool.*** The schedule for the best viewing times and places was a terrific help as we planned our days. We did drive the Blacktail Plateau as suggested, and it was spectacular just as the author said it would be (also not crowded). We saw our only bear on this road--a black bear. ...And Artist Point--what a wonderful place. We were lucky enough to meet the designer of this particular view point (he was in the park with his family). The references for exposure settings and lenses were so helpful. Also, the tips on places to see that are less travelled (better shots) were great. I am planning to go back, and I will have this book in hand. Thank you for a terrific guide to my photography and travels in Yellowstone.

...if you plan to take a camera. I got a copy and read it cover to cover a number of times before our Yellowstone trip. (Good thing I did, as a liquid spill in my trunk ruined the book before we reached the park). The info I had absorbed from this book enabled me to get great shots...at the right spot...at the right time of day. Get it and internalize the information before you go. You will be glad you did.

Planning our first visit to Yellowstone to do nature/landscape photography. This book will be a great help in planning our trip. Lots of good tips, both on equipment and locations. Authors listing of equipment used for each photograph is a great help. Park is divided into sections to assist with planning. Wish it had a map with exact mileages, but those are available from other sources.
