Book Description

Wittliff Gallery of Southwestern and Mexican Photography Ser October 1, 2007

Lonesome Dove--Larry McMurtry's epic tale of two aging Texas Rangers who drive a herd of stolen cattle 2,500 miles from the Rio Grande to Montana to found the first ranch there--captured the public imagination and has never let it go. The novel, published in 1985, was a New York Times best seller and won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. More than two decades after publication, it still sells tens of thousands of copies every year.

The Lonesome Dove miniseries, which first aired on CBS in 1989, lassoed an even wider audience. Twenty-six million households watched the premier episode, and countless millions more have ridden with Gus and Call each time the movie has rerun on TV, video, and DVD. In addition to its popular success, the miniseries has also garnered unanimous critical acclaim. It was nominated for eighteen Emmy Awards and won seven. It also won Golden Globe Awards for Best Television Miniseries and Best Actor; a Peabody Award; the D. W. Griffith Award for Best Television Series; the National Association of Television Critics Award for Program of the Year and Outstanding Achievement in Drama; and the Writers' Guild of America Award for Best Teleplay (Bill Wittliff).

Now bringing the sweeping visual imagery of the miniseries to the printed page, A Book of Photographs from Lonesome Dove presents more than one hundred classic images created by Bill Wittliff, the award-winning writer and executive producer (with Suzanne de Passe) of Lonesome Dove and a renowned fine art photographer. Wittliff took these photographs during the filming of the miniseries, but they are worlds apart from ordinary production stills. Reminiscent of the nineteenth-century cowboy photographs of Erwin Smith and the western paintings of Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell, each Lonesome Dove image stands alone as an evocative work of art, while as a whole, they provide a stunning visual summary of the entire miniseries.

Accompanying the photographs are a foreword by Lonesome Dove author Larry McMurtry and an introduction by Stephen Harrigan, who describes the epic-in-itself creative journey that led to the making of the Lonesome Dove novel, miniseries, and book of photographs. In the afterword, Bill Wittliff recalls unforgettable moments--some hilarious, others momentous--from the production of the miniseries. A roster of the cast and crew completes the text.

As its enduring popularity proves, Lonesome Dove conveys the spirit of the American West and the freedom of the open plains and sky as few other creative works ever have. For everyone who loves the novel and the movie, A Book of Photographs from Lonesome Dove provides yet another powerful way of experiencing this mythical, yet wholly real, world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing Lonesome Dove Photos from Movie Set - Remarkable Photography, December 11, 2007
This review is from: A Book of Photographs from Lonesome Dove (Wittliff Gallery of Southwestern and Mexican Photography Ser) (Hardcover)
Larry McMurtry was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1986 for his outstanding novel, Lonesome Dove. Subsequently, the four-part miniseries, Lonesome Dove, won six Emmy Awards; Lonesome Dove remains popular on DVD, and is rated as one of the finest westerns ever produced. The subject of this review, A Book of Photographs from Lonesome Dove, is a remarkable photo collection that will undoubtedly also win more awards for Lonesome Dove.

The photographer and compiler, Bill Wittliff, was not the official set photographer for Lonesome Dove, but as the scriptwriter for the miniseries and a co-producer, he had unique and unlimited access to making of Lonesome Dove. His personal photography is simply outstanding. Many photos span two adjacent pages, while others are smaller inserts. The book itself measures roughly 12 x 12 inches, and is quite suitable for display.

The photographs have a slightly brownish yellow tint which gives them a historical authenticity. In studying these beautiful pictures, I was convinced that I was indeed looking at actual photos from that period when the wild west was coming to an end. I had a sense of nostalgia not just due to the end-of-the-west theme, but because I was remembering once again just how remarkable was the experience of my first viewing of Lonesome Dove. In these photos Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, Danny Glover, Robert Ulrich, Tim Scott, and Rick Schroder are not merely actors. They are the actual characters of that grand story Lonesome Dove; they are indeed the spirit of the west.

There is relatively little text in this large book. There is a short forward written by Larry McMurtry and a longer introduction by Stephen Harrigan. Bill Wittliff authored some concluding observations regarding the making of the film. There is also a listing of the cast and the crew. The photographs have titles, but no explanatory text. None is needed, and would have been redundant. The photographs speak clearly for themselves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Photographs from Lonesome Dove, November 14, 2007
A Kid's Review
This review is from: A Book of Photographs from Lonesome Dove (Wittliff Gallery of Southwestern and Mexican Photography Ser) (Hardcover)
For those of you who loved the book and the mini-series, this book of photographs ties it all together.

This is not a book of movie stills or photos of a movie shoot. These photographs have captured the essence of the time and place that was Lonesome Dove, Texas, in 1876.

Each photograph is a work of art.

A picture is worth a thousand words.
