5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent complement to classroom lecture
This book is a requirement for my introduction to photography class, so I had to buy it. It is easy to read and understand and is perfect for beginners and veterans, since it covers both black and white film as well as digital photography. I just wish that books like these were not so expensive, since it is a requirement for some students and for folks wanting to learn...

1.0 out of 5 stars 125$ !!!!!!???????
I have used this text for teaching silver based analog photography since the first edition. It's clear, well organized, and has great diagrams and practical tips. However, its price now is an absurdity, even immoral for a book that gets much of its material from 35 years ago. I have used this text for teaching silver based analog photography since the first edition. It's clear, well organized, and has great diagrams and practical tips. However, its price now is an absurdity, even immoral for a book that gets much of its material from 35 years ago. So, if you are learning analog photography, buy an old edition: one can be had for 5$ (yes, five!) dollars. Then buy a cheap book on digital if you need one. At some point, book buyers need to send a message.

3.0 out of 5 stars For serious amateurs or aspiring professionals, May 21, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Photography (10th Edition) (Paperback)
This is a very thorough reference book that is a great choice for someone who really wants to know the background of professional photography and learn the "rules" as they exist traditionally. Having gone to school and gotten a degree in photography, I didn't see anything in the book that I wasn't already familiar with, however it was a nice refresher. I purchased the book to brush up on my photography knowledge in order to take a certification exam. This has proven to be a nice resource, however I believe it may not be necessary for certification purposes.

As far as I can tell, the information in the book is very accurate and has been updated to reflect current technology. There is very little in-depth information on any particular aspect of photography. The reader is introduced to a specific concept or procedure, given general information about it, and told to consult an owners manual or other documentation for the remainder of the explanation. This is done in order that specificity does not outrank general accuracy.

Bottom line: this is a great resource for new and aspiring professionals and collects information that would otherwise take great time to find and study. If you are a practicing professional photographer and have several years experience or more, you'll find very little new information. Most professionals who have been in the business for 5 or more years have been utilizing many of the techniques described on a frequent basis.

I bought this because it was required for a class. Normally I'd just plan to sell it back, but this book is so thorough and comprehensive (so far anyway) that I probably won't. My only gripe is that it seems like it should be a hardcover given the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Photography Tenth Edition - Valuable Resource, July 1, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Photography (10th Edition) (Paperback)
This book is packed with excellent reference on photography technical aspects. I did find some of the information contradictory and confusing but overall a pretty good class reference. I would recommend it for the photography student as the technical side of photography may not be for the average camera point and shoot user.

I bought this book for Photo 1 and 2, but I have been using it later on too. It's kind of like encyclopedia of photography, but not as boring. I can always go back to it to refresh my memory or even learn something new...

4.0 out of 5 stars Book Needs Editing, January 4, 2012
This review is from: Photography (10th Edition) (Paperback)
I have used this book as a primary reference source since the mid-80s. It is detailed, thorough and complete in its examination of photography. However, since photography has evolved dramatically in the past 15 years with the use of digital capture, I believe it is time to edit the book to recognize this.

I am not suggesting that film photography is not a viable medium in the 21st century. Many photographers legitimately continue use film to create masterful images. But the majority of today's photographic efforts utilize digital capture and workflow. As a result, pages on darkroom techniques seem outdated.

I would suggest the authors and publishers create two versions of this valuable reference book. The 2 titles could be: "Photography...Film Emphasis" and " Photography...Digital Emphasis". Considering the hefty list price of this book, I do not need numerous pages on darkroom techniques and chemical development. More pages on digital photography would be welcomed.

Nonetheless, this book should be in every photographer's library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Photography 10th Ed. Review, December 23, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Photography (10th Edition) (Paperback)
The book I purchased was a used edition and arrived in better than expected condition. I purchased this as a basic study guide for my PPA certification and so far I'm bored stiff, but then I've been schooled in photography and have been doing this for a few decades now. I cover a lot of this same material in the photo classes that I teach to armatures and some who claim to be professionals and based on their reaction in class I can tell you that this book would be invaluable to many, if not all of my students, in fact I've started recommending that they purchase this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners, October 23, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Photography (10th Edition) (Paperback)
I'm still reading but so far this book as helped me learn things about my camera that I didn't know existed. I have a digital SLR camera but always put it on automatic and never bothered to learn about its other features. Reading the camera manual put me to sleep and seemed uninteresting. This book brought some of those features to life with easy to understand pictures and examples. I'll definitely be looking for more books from this author.
