Worth over $100?,

This review is from: Photography (9th Edition) (Paperback)
I've received and read the book, and enjoy the content. However, compared to many other books in the marketplace, I'm having a hard time comprehending where there is over $100 worth of value. It seems that everytime something is written by an academic and presented as a textbook, regardless of the content or quality, that the price is jacked up by 3 to 4 times what it is really worth. I'd suggest looking for a used version of this book unless you really want a pristine copy to show off to others.

Great Technical Intro,
By
This review is from: Photography (9th Edition) (Paperback)
I'm giving this book 5 stars because I couldn't put it down.
As an amateur in photography, this book really helped explain the technical background behind all the numbers and jargon strewn throughout magazines, photography websites, manuals and so forth. While other books tried to explain concepts such as depth of field in relation to aperture, this was the book that made everything click for me. It wasn't filled with facts to memorize, it had explanations that I could understand. After reading this book I really felt like I had a firm grasp of the technical groundwork for learning photography. I have a much greater understanding and appreciation for the technical debates now and instead of my eyes hazing over when I see numbers, they are meaningful for me and I look for them. Because I understand instead of memorized, I am able to ask the right questions and notice when things don't make sense or are missing. Perhaps the greatest thing this book did for me though, is to make me realize that understanding the technicalities of photography is not what makes a good photographer. I started to see that it takes a lot of experience and a good eye to imagine, compose and create a picture. I started to see that perhaps those things are actually more important than perfect exposure. So while I learned a lot it was also a little humbling for me. It gave me a better respect for photography and photographers. It really opened up a whole world for me. A lot of viewers noted that the digital section of the book was a little light. And while I think it was, the point of the book is not to be a cookbook. Rather I think that it is an introduction into the world of photography, and digital imaging really is only a very small piece of that world. This book has definitely broadened my world of photography. I have a better understanding that photography isn't just something learned in a book, but by a continuous process of learning how to make pictures. I really liked this book because I felt like it gave me the foundation to start the process of learning how to make great pictures. It has given me the ability to better critique and adjust my photography. This book was a springboard that has inspired me to dive deeper and learn more about photography.

I purchased this book for myself to help me study for the Certified Professional Photographers exam. The book was a VITAL tool for studying for the exam. I can truly say I would not have passed the exam on the first time if I had not used this book to study. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to get into photography as a career. GREAT, AMAZING book. LOVE IT.

Great Book Get It,

This review is from: Photography (9th Edition) (Paperback)
I got this book to prepare for the certification test.
I thought that that after 5 years of self study (from various authors) I had a good grasp of photography. I was wrong. The first 3-5 chapters told gave me a better foundation of photography. A lot of authors soft pedal the facts that this book is solid on. And for those of you that need images to prove a concept, there are plenty of them. This is a timeless reference that will give the reader an all around background on photography. If I remember correctly another reviewer suggested that for the price, skip this and get Bryan Peterson's understanding exposure. Well I have it and some concepts he glosses over. Once again if you want to increase you knowledge of photography get this book it is a great reference. The only draw back is the information on film which is a dying industry. But for exposure, aperture, lens, color etc. this is a great book.

Perfect for all photographers,
By
This review is from: Photography (9th Edition) (Paperback)
"Photography (9th Edition)" is perfect for any kind of photographer, whether it's someone who is picking up a camera for the first time or someone who is much more experienced. From the seemingly endless supply of information to the immense number of beautiful photographs, there is nothing this book doesn't cover.
It is thorough and very detailed. The book provides images and explanations of film processing, charts of indicated exposures in particular lighting situations, and also illustrates composition and framing. It even has a chapter devoted to the history of the photography. A very important aspect to know, however, is "Photography" leans toward black and white 35 mm film photography. Knowing how to use a camera manually is an important technical and creative aspect of photography, so this book emphasizes that. "Photography" is just as inspirational as it is informative. Besides the technical data, there are famous photographs like Bresson's "Place de l'Europe, Paris" and Man Ray's "Solarization." There are also short biographies of well-known artists, such as Clint Clemens, Annie Leibovitz, and John Sexton, incorporating their work. The information in the biographies applies to particular techniques within different chapters. I find these pictures motivating and inspirational because of the variety of approaches, styles, and successful techniques covered. This wonderful visual aspect of the book instructs the reader through other artists' work and also encourages them to grab a camera and start shooting. When I think of the money, supplies, time and frustration saved because of the knowledge gained from this book, I can't find a single reason why anyone who's truly passionate about photography wouldn't need to buy it. The combination of technical information and visual examples "Photography" provides is an important way to improve any person's photographic abilities.

Bought Photography, 9th edition to study for the certified professional photographer exam. After study this will become a permanent book in the library. For a long time I've wanted a complete reference and this is it. I especially like the companion website, specifically the study questions for each chapter.

For this to be a used book I am very happy. The pages aren't ripped or torn there isn't stains or any pages missing and I must say I'm impressed. I've gone on numerous sites and I have to admit that this is my first time using Amazon. Although, I was a little hesitant at first I will definitely be ordering more from you again.

I ordered this book only because it was recommended reading in preparation for the PPA Photographer Certification program. But when I started reading it I was surprised to learn so much in depth information about photography in such a clear, concise manner with plenty of photographic diagrams and examples throughout the book. And yet somehow the information presented isn't dry or boring. I don't know of any other book of photography that covers so many topics to the depth that it is explained. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone that does photography.

This book is so dense with useful information for new and moderately experienced users of SLR cameras. Even though it is pricey, for a textbook, the price is still within the typical range of textbooks. I took a chance on this new vendor but delivery was prompt, and the item was as described. No communication was really required so I can't comment on that.
