4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, June 3, 2009
This review is from: Photography and Beyond in Japan (Hardcover)
This book is filled with beautiful and evocative images. There's particular stress on the way Japanese photographer's have experimented with the medium. Bombastic at times, but there are still many interesting and stimulating ideas.

2.0 out of 5 stars Art museum staff try and talk about photography, October 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Photography and Beyond in Japan (Hardcover)
The authors at one point admit that this is more a book about art than photography. About forty pages into the book there is a short and interesting discussion on the introduction of photography in Japan. Then the authors skip the next hundred years and start trying to explain the works of the twelve artists they've chosen. There is a Chinese saying that you should avoid "art for the ears." If you have to explain a VISUAL work that should tell you something. There are a few intriguing images in this book but they are lost in the art-blabber and the distracting jumbo size citations. If you find "art speak" an art in itself then this is your book.

It is an attractive book (if you judge it by its cover) and would look good on your coffee table.
