5.0 out of 5 stars A Concise Gem!!!
I love this book, for each time I open it at any page (really ANY page) I end up learning something in spite of its concise nature; a major quality! And that is also its weakest point, as far as I am concerned : it is a bit short on lenght, or should I say depth in the very intimate sense that Bryan Peterson has gotten us used to since its strong debut with Understanding...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Concise Gem!!!, March 7, 2010
This review is from: The Photography Bible (Paperback)
I love this book, for each time I open it at any page (really ANY page) I end up learning something in spite of its concise nature; a major quality! And that is also its weakest point, as far as I am concerned : it is a bit short on lenght, or should I say depth in the very intimate sense that Bryan Peterson has gotten us used to since its strong debut with Understanding Exposure. I like reading stories explaining ways by which a given professional photographer tackles various challenges regarding aperture / shutter speed / composition choices, but here one never feels that sort of close relationship with the writer. On the other hand, as a reference book or field guide, the book as a whole is amazingly dense as everything remains clearly explained with great simple tips, informative tabs, catchy graphics, and beautiful sample shots about several relevant topics in each chapter (CAMERAS IN THE 21ST CENTURY, HOW CAMERAS WORK, IMAGE CAPTURE, SYSTEM ACCESSORIES, IMAGE MANIPULATION, BASIS TECHNIQUES, EQUIPMENT TECHNIQUES, SUBJECT TECHNIQUES, AFTER THE PHOTO, HISTORIC MOMENTS IN PHOTOGRAPHY, GLOSSARY)!

This book is terrific! As good as or better than taking a digital photography class.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great beginners' book, July 10, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Photography Bible (Paperback)
This is a great book vor beginners like me because I was able to use it not only on the great camera I purchased recently, but I was able to take advantage of features in another camera I previously thought to be inferior.

There is a tremendous amount of detail in this book and it is packaged in small portions so that I can incrementally absorb what knowledge I need for a specific shooting effort. I can go back and review that particular topic without feeling diverted from my interest, since there isn't an overwhelming volume of 'related' information presented with each topic.

All the while, the accumulation of these topics, through continual regular reading, builds up my overall knowledge of photography.

The book is very practical and all of it's content can be tested in real situations. It's almost as if I were self-educating with a patient, experienced coach at my side.

One of the nicest features of this book is the cover, which, in my case, was not simple thin cardboard, but a coated, re-inforced material. I write that because I have carried this book with me everywhere and not been exactly kind to it but it still looks somewhat like new after 7 months of regular reading.

I am grateful that a friend turned me on to this book. I am sure anyone interested in learning about photography, or interested in learning MORE about photography will appreciate this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, slightly outdated, September 7, 2010

Good solid manual for people trying to get a grasp on how to become proficient in photography.
Gives a solid understanding of the basics, shows you how the equipment interacts and functions.
The specific models and software mentioned are a little outdated, that's the reason it's a 4 star purchase instead of a 5 star.

Excellent 'user's guide' book for beginners and intermediate photographers. Hits most topics of concern to photographers in an easy to understand (and short) format. Practical and useful advice that will help amateur photographers up the learning curve. Does a great job explaining the 'language' of photography. Lotsa pictures! (remember---a picture is worth a thousand words)

5.0 out of 5 stars All the Basics, March 24, 2008
This review is from: The Photography Bible (Paperback)
I recently bought this book for my assistant. My assistant having very little photography experience at the beginning helped a lot but didn't always know what I was doing. She now has a very good idea and even helps me compose shots now. Wonderful! Would recommend for any beginner photographer or any photographer needing to brush up on basic ideas and terms.
