You install the metal rings by peeling off the wax paper backing and exposing the adhesive side already applied to the ring. The kit gives no assistance or tools to help apply the ring on center, you just have to eyeball it. The adhesive is very sticky and does not seem like it will come off easily so try to get it right the first time. The filter itself is larger than the lens opening on this camera, so if it is off-center a bit, it probably will not affect the image, but if you are picky like me, you won't want to have a wacky off-center filter on your camera.
Once the ring is installed onto the lens, you just move the filter close to it and the magnets will click and hold on. I was concerned about how well the magnets would hold, but one time I forgot that the filter was on and stuck the camera out the window of a moving car at freeway speeds and the magnets held it on fine. I just returned from A three week trip during which I was using the filter frequently and never had a problem with the filter falling off due to "natural causes" such as gravity, wind, etc. However, I did end up dropping the filter twice due to accidents like my hand brushing across the edge of the filter which moving my arm to pick something up. Luckily, the glass did not break and I only ended up with some cosmetic dings on the edge of the filter.
The carrying case is pretty nifty. It is a pouch made out of neoprene with a slit on one side that can be covered with a flap to hold the filter in.Read more ›
The one issue I've constantly had is that the magnet just isn't strong enough. I constantly misplaced the magnet in my bag, pocket, or when I reached to grab the camera in a hurry. As of writing this review, I've lost the filter altogether. I can't find it anywhere. That's a huge issue for me. I'm very careful with my camera gear, and do my best to keep items together. I made a concerted effort to keep the MagFilter either on the camera or in its pouch which is attached to the camera.
It appears to me that there could be two ways to solve this problem. First, make the magnet stronger. You obviously don't want a magnet as loose as the one here because it's just too easy to misplace the filter. A stronger magnet wouldn't take anything away from the functionality of the camera, nor would it make the manufacturing, storage, shipping, or design of the filter materially different.
The second option is to make the filter's carrying case actually safe to use.Read more ›
It doesn't impact the size of the camera when off (the thin metal band is hardly noticeable) and when the filter is on, it is secure and does the job.
This isn't as good as high quality muli-coated glass, but isn't that bad as well. It's a bit reflective and can cause some issues with direct light, but again, for this camera and the cost it is a great solution.
