About the Author

Freeman Patterson began to work in photography in 1965. He co-founded the Namaqualand Photographic Workshops in southern Africa and has given numerous workshops in the United States, Israel, England, New Zealand, and Australia. He has published eleven books and has written for many national magazines. In 2001, Patterson received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the North American Nature Photography Association.

Freeman Patterson's words and photographs have been a constant inspiration and motivation for me as a beginning photographer. His belief in exploration make the craft of photography more than just a method of documentation, and his in-depth explanation of how to apply basic visual design principles to photographs have been invaluable to me in my development as an artist. This and all his books are wonderful, and I use them all the time for both ideas and advice.
